Chapter Six

Friday had rolled around and Brooke stood in studio A, learning her solo. She looked at herself in the mirror. She ran her hands down her bare flat stomach. She was wearing an aqua, one-shoulder, bra top and purple, spandex shorts. She turned her head from one side and then to another. Her hair was in a messy bun, like it usually is by the end of rehearsal. Brooke turned away and finished her dance.

“Good,” Abby said when Brooke was finished. “Go get Maddie.”

Brooke nodded, pushing her way out of the room before she started crying again. She connected with her solo on a level she never did before. Brooke fought back the tears. Rehearsal for her was over, and of course she was the last one to learn her solo the day before . She walked through the dancers den and into the girls’ dressing room. She changed into a pair of Soffe shorts and her high-school’s spirit t-shirt.

She picked up her phone and saw a picture of her and Brandon from that weekend. She gave a slight smile. That week had been a big long parade of ups and downs. Nick and Brandon fighting, failing every test possible, getting a solo was pretty good, but then Abby knocked her back down with being on the bottom of the pyramid.

She got her stuff together and went to sit out in the den. She needed to get home and get to sleep. It wasn’t that late, it was only around seven. But still, after a long week of learning a new group dance, a trio, and now a solo, she was pooped. Brooke threw her bag around her body and shoved her feet into a pair of flip flops. She walked out of the dressing room and went into the dancers’ den. She sat on a stack of mats, scrolling through her phone, waiting for Brandon’s class to get out.

“Brooke,” Auriel called from across the room, “Are you going to Nina’s party tonight?”

“Probably not,” Brooke said. “I have a competition tomorrow.”

“Right…” Auriel said. “When are you going to be back with us?”

Brooke shrugged, “I don’t know. I miss dancing with you guys. Paige and her friends can be rather annoying, sometimes.” Brooke paused, “Scratch that, they’re most always annoying.”

Auriel gave a slight smile, “Are you done for the night?” Brooke nodded. “Come in with our class. I doubt James would mind.”

Brooke smiled, hopping off of the mats. She set her phone down and left her bag on top of the mats. She pulled her feet out of the flip flops and grabbed a pair of tap shoes from her bag. Brooke walked in, getting friendly greetings from everyone. She tapped with them for about thirty minutes until their class was over. Brooke smiled as she came out of studio B.

“That was fun. I miss y’all.” Brooke says to Auriel, trying to ignore Payton standing behind her.

“Come back anytime.” James says, welcoming the petite tap class in.

“So, Brooke,” Brandon swooped in, leaning against the stack of mats where Brooke’s stuff was. “Do you wanna go to Nina’s party tonight?”

“Brandon you know I have a competition tomorrow.” Brooke said.

Brandon rolled his eyes, “Live a little, Brooke.”

Brooke looked from one side of the room to the other. She smiled, letting Brandon know that she was in. He smiled, kissed her and then went off to the boys dressing room. Right before he walked in, he turned around and said, “I’ll pick you up at nine.”

Brooke smiled and nodded. She collected her things and met with her mom and little sister. They all walked out to the car. Brooke jumped up into the front seat and Paige stayed in the back. Music played quietly and Paige hummed along in the back seat. Brooke held a steady gaze out the window.

“So Mom,” Brooke said.

Kelly said, “So Brooke.”

Brooke took a breath in and said, “Could I go to Nina’s party tonight? Brandon’s going to pick me up at nine. There won’t be any alcohol and Brandon knows I have to be home before midnight.”

“No.” Kelly said, flipping the blinker on at the stop light.

“Why not?”

“You have a competition tomorrow and you are in three dances.” Kelly said. “And I don’t want you to see Brandon any more, and I don’t want you to see Nick, either. You need to focus on school and on dance. You failed three tests this week and you got detention because you were late for class.”

“Mom, I told you. My teacher held me late and didn’t give me a note.” Brooke said. “Please mom, just let me go to the party. It’ll probably be really lame and we’ll probably just go get ice cream. Please?”

“I wanna go!” Paige added.

“No!” Brooke shouted at her little sister. “You have to stay home. I’m so sick and tired of being with you all the time. This is for me, they’re my friends! Not yours!”

“Brooke Marie Hyland!” Kelly slammed on her brakes in the middle of the abandoned road in their neighborhood. “Do you want to walk home?”

Brooke said nothing. She grabbed her phone out of the cup holder and opened the door. She fought back the tears as hard as she could. She slammed the door and Kelly drove off without her. Tears fell out of Brooke’s eyes as she started walking down the side walk to her house. Dogs were barking from across the street and motion sensor lights flipped on as she walked by each house. She heard a car drive up the road and slowly stop in front of her.

“Hey pretty girl!” A man from the car said.

Brooke looked to the white 4Runner. She saw two men who were tattooed head to toe. Brooke could smell the alcohol raging from the car and the faint smell of weed streaming out the window. It smelt like the locker rooms at school. Brooke got scared. She looked from the car to her phone.

“Do you need a ride home?”

Brooke didn’t say anything. She just kept walking.

“Didja hear us? We says to come in our car!” The other guy said.

“Yeah, I heard you.” Brooke said. “And no, I don’t need a ride.”

“Yeah, yous do. Yeah yous do.” The first guy said.

“BROOKE!”

Brooke turned around and then heard a gunshot. What was happening?
