Chapter 37

Billie was pacing around the hospital waiting room with a million questions running through her head. The biggest ones being; how did Dillon get free and exactly how was this nightmare going to get worse?

Janis was still out there and without knowing her next move there was no telling how bad she and Kent’s next strike against the team could run. Had Janis let Dillon go to deliver this message? Judging from Pete’s tight expression and the amped up security she wasn’t the only one thinking that way.

The team moved form Dillon’s office to the hospital waiting room. Billie wasn’t alone as she waited to hear something on his condition. He had collapsed quickly into her arms and hadn’t opened his eyes since. He was back with her but sadly that didn’t mean he was safe. There was no telling what Janis had given him or her plan on Kent’s order.

It was unfair that even locked away in prison he had all this power. The good guys were supposed to win.

Sasha came over and wrapped her arm around her friend’s shoulder. “The worse is over. They no longer have the surprise element, we’re ready for whatever they try next. Dillon is here and he’s alive.” She focused on all the points she wanted Billie to remember. “It’s all going to work out.”

Billie turned her tearful eyes to Sasha. “How can you be so sure?”

“Because I know something about waiting for the worse and how horrible it can be. Sometimes it’s better for you and everyone around you if you can stay positive. It took me a long time to learn that but you’re blessed with such an awesome friend to pass all this wisdom down.” Sasha was trying to focus on the bright side that sometimes was too far from reach and get her friend to at least smile through the pain.

It worked, Billie cracked a smile. “You’re crazy.”

“I have to be. You want to know another secret? A little crazy actually keeps you sane.” They hugged again and pulled away in time to see the doctor coming their way.

Dr. Wesson had a grim look on his elderly face. “Mr. Merchant is resting. We ran several tests and we’re running several more. He was drugged with a powerful tranquilizer with components I have never seen before.”

Pete stepped forward and asked, “What does that mean?”

“I suspect the drug was homemade.” The doctor gave his best guess. “I suspect you have an idea of what happened to the commissioner?”

Pete nodded. “He was taken by a woman who works with the crime lab. She’d have the knowledge and ingredients to cook up something fresh.”

“Will he be ok?” Billie asked, she wasn’t very concerned with the how and why of what Janis did.

“We’ve flushed his system and as far as I can tell there shouldn’t be any lasting effects of the drug besides his lost of consciousness here and there. In his moments of lucidity he was asking for you.” The doctor had met with the team earlier and introduced themselves.

Billie thanked the doctor for all his time and let the man to keep talking with Pete. A nurse waiting behind the doctor smiled and showed Billie to the ER cubical Dillon was waiting in until a room became available.

Her heart tightened at the sight of how sickly he looked. She took a deep breath and remembered he was alive and safe, that was the most important part and the rest could be fixed. She reached out and held his hand. “Dillon?” she would rather leave him asleep so he could fight off the last of the drugs but Pete and the rest of the team needed something to go on in order to find Janis’ hideout. After the bitch was locked away in a cell just as comfortable as Kent’s then they could all breathe a little easier.
