Chapter Six

"Mummy!" Veronica shouted as I came outside. "Come play!"

"I'm okay, Roni. Just play with Liam."

"Please, Mummy?" She ran up to where I sat on the back porch.

"Yeah, please, mummy?" Liam stuck his lip out and I glared.

"Alright," I smiled at Roni as her brown eyes lit up with glee.

"Yay!" Roni giggled. "We're building a snow man!" I saw the big pile of snow they'd rounded into the base.

"Awesome! I'll help." I started getting snow into a slightly smaller ball, feeling Liam's dark eyes on me as I worked. I noticed that it was all too quiet outside and I slowly turned my head to look behind me.

FWOOSH! An enormous snowball gobsmacked me right in the middle of my face. I wiped the snow out of my eyes and stood up. Roni and Liam burst out laughing, rolling around in the snow. I smirked and grabbed the huge, round belly I'd made for the snowman. I dropped it right on top of Liam's head. Who's laughing now?

"Bloody hell!" He cried, shivering even in his heavy winter coat.

"Language!" I giggled. He growled playfully and leapt towards me. "Liam!" I screeched as he pinned me to the snow packed ground.

I looked up into his eyes, only an inch away from me. He licked his dry lips and a small puff of air formed between us.

"Liam?" I whispered.

"Uh... Yeah?" A confused look came across his face.

"You're crushing me." I smirked as his eyes widened and he stood up, offering me his hand.

"Sorry." He swallowed.

"It's fine." I smiled as I turned around slightly to see Roni playing with some snow.

"Liam!" Geoff called out from the porch. "There's a girl on the phone for you, says her name is Lisa."

"Tell her I'll be right there!" He hollered back.

"How'd Ms. Skanky-Waitress get your phone number?" I said nonchalantly, brushing snow off my pants.

"I gave it her after you left."

"Oh, we'll then you'd better go get it." I smiled and he smiled back before bounding up the stairs and into the cabin.

I couldn't help the single tear that fell down my cheek. I didn't love him, of that I was absolutely sure, but I still felt forgotten in a way. Damn hormones.

"Mummy, why are you crying?" Roni asked, crawling into my lap after I sat back down on the frozen ground.

"I'm just cold... wanna go inside and get some hot chocolate?"

"Yay!" She squealed, grabbing my hand and jumping up and down. I wiped my tears away as I laughed and carried Veronica up the steps.

"How was your phone call?" I asked Liam, noticing he was off the phone.

"It was pretty good." He replied, taking Roni from me and playing with the curls in her hair.

"Good." I started slowly mixing the water and the chocolate powder. I asked my next question with extreme caution: "What did she say?"

Liam looked at me curiously for a moment before turning his attention to Roni once again.

"Nothing much," He said finally. "But she's coming over for dinner tonight."
