To Save a Kingdom

She waited until clouds covered the partial light of the moon, and then she quickly walked the gelding toward the edge of the forest. It was about twenty yards away, and she feared that she would hear the siren call of guards shouting, “Intruder!” 

Kai breathed a sigh of relief when both her and her horse were under the protection of the forest. No shouts of urgency were called from ground or castle top. She was relatively safe. 

She mounted her horse and clicked her tongue, urging him onward. 

This was the beginning of her new life. No more royal title. No more Princess Kailene. She looked back at the great castle, shadowed by the trees blocking her view. This could no longer be her home anymore. In order to save her kingdom, she had to leave. She didn’t want to. She loved her people with a fierce loyalty, but that loyalty was what drove her to leave. And leave she must.

She turned away, her horse leading the way into her new life. A tear slipped from Princess Kailene’s lashes. This would be the last she would ever see of her home. She could do no more. This would be her last act as a royal. No longer would she be Kailene.

Just Kai. A commoner.

She would become a commoner for her people. If that’s what her people needed, she would do it with pleasure

And that’s what it took for her to save a kingdom.

*To the side you will see the picture of Miranda Raison from Merlin. This is who Kai is. Of course, her outfit varies a little and roles may be reversed in the later chapters, but for the most part, this is how I picture Kai! :)
