“Thanks for inviting me today.”

I look up at Zack as I pull my shirt down and grab my purse. “Really?” I’m so surprised that I stop, my shirt resting midway on my belly. I see his eyes drift again.

“Why do you care so much about me?” I ask, thoroughly confused, feeling vulnerable. I cross my arms in front of me, waiting for his answer.

“I haven’t felt this way before. This-this pull to you. I know this sounds stupid, but I feel like we were meant to cross paths somehow. But I don’t want to just cross paths. I want to stay on yours.”

My heart swells as the words leave his mouth. I look down, tugging the hem of my shirt to the top of my pants and thumbing the strap of my bag.

He opens the door for me, and I walk out, biting my lip and thinking about what he said. How can I respond to that?

We make it to the waiting room and then out to the street, where the limo is waiting. I duck in, sliding over to make room for Zack.

“What’s wrong?”

I sigh. “It’s just, I’m going to have their baby. And then life will go back to normal. I’ll be watching two children, Angie and Chris will be in LA, and you’ll want your own life. I don’t see how we could fit into each other’s. I care for you. I do. But, what can we do?” I ask, turning to face him. He looks stumped and my heart sinks.

“Ever seen How I Met Your Mother?” is what he says. He surprises me, but I nod.

“Only every single episode.”

“So, I take it you’ve seen the Drumroll, Please one?” he asks.

I nod again.

“You say this can’t be our reality. What if we kept this pure? We do the relationship thing for the next five months. When you have the baby, we’ll move on.” he says. “We don’t commit to anything after this. Just like Ted and Victoria. They wanted one perfect night. Couldn’t we have one perfect five month relationship?”

I try to wrap my head around what he’s saying. And I hate to say, I like the idea. No one will get hurt. We both get what we want. And at the end of it all, we can just walk away, hearts intact.

“Okay.”

He smiles at me.

“So what now?” I ask.

He smirks at me. “Well, if you’re so smart, and you’ve seen the episode, you know what happens next, now don’t you?”

I feel a blush creep across my cheeks. I nod, inching closer on the leather seat. His breath collides with my face, and I inhale his minty scent. I love mint. Wow, Lauren, stalker much?
