I think Asher’s made contact with magazine girl. Sorry, Brooklyn. I’ve caught him hanging around her locker a few times and even though he hasn’t said anything about her since that time in my photography class, I know he hasn’t forgotten about her.

Her picture is still up in his bedroom.

So, since he’s obviously interested, I’ve decided to pay closer attention to her. At first it wasn’t easy, because Brooklyn really did blend in wherever she went. What I mean is that she didn’t stand out, so sometimes even when she was around, I didn’t notice her. But a few days ago, that all changed.

Because the girl got a makeover. An extreme makeover. We’re talking plastic surgery type of stuff:

*Hair went from blah brown to sunny blond

*Lips are plumper

*More junk in her trunk

*She seems taller (but that might just be the four-inch heels she’s been wearing lately)

*Her skin’s cleared up

I know there are other things that she’s done, but I haven’t exactly been able to get up close and personal with her yet, so I’m not sure what they are. One thing’s for sure: the wallflower has finally bloomed.

And now there’s not a person in the school who doesn’t notice her. In fact, she’s the only thing people are talking about. The rumors surrounding her run the gamut. Some kids think that she’s a new student. Others wonder what she looked like before she went under the knife. I even overheard a group of girls discussing the possibility that she’s actually an actress who was just going to Clearview as research for a role.

It seems like Asher and I are the only ones who know what she looked like before. But I still have no idea why she did it. Only that it definitely worked.

I have to wonder what Asher thinks of her new look, if he’s even noticed yet. What am I saying? Of course he’s noticed. How could you not? Brooklyn 2.0 is extraordinary. She’s actually quite stunning, if you’re into that complete perfection sort of look. And from what I can tell, she’s still trying to get used to the attention that she’s getting now. I saw her nearly trip over her own feet yesterday after one of the meathead football players hit on her. Just proves that you can give a girl a makeover, but you can’t change everything.

Which leads me back to the question of why. Why the drastic measures? Why the new look? Sure, she was unmemorable before, but it’s not like she was hideous. I totally get fixing a few things. Covering up a scar. Dyeing your hair. But changing your entire appearance? There has to be something behind it. Something big.

Right now, the only theory I have is that by doing the makeover, she’ll elevate her social status. I would hate the extra attention myself, and even though Brooklyn is still getting used to it, she seems to be soaking it in. Sometimes she does seem a bit overwhelmed, but for the most part, I swear she likes it. And if popularity was her goal, then she’s achieved it, because now she’s caught the attention of The Elite.

Yesterday, the whole cafeteria watched as Brooklyn ascended the stairs that led to the table where the most influential group in our school sits. Which, by the way, is totally ridiculous. Who eats lunch at a table that’s raised above the rest of the students?  The arrogance of the group astounds me sometimes. On the other hand, they wouldn’t have power over everyone if we didn’t give it to them, so I really should blame the other students at Clearview...

I hate to admit it, but it looks like The Elite are tapping Brooklyn to be in their little secret society. And from what I can tell, she’s hasn’t told them to take a flying leap.

I’m not sure why this surprises me. The truth is, I don’t really know the girl. Even after watching her for a few weeks, I feel like I know just as much as I did the first day I saw her. Still, there’s that certain something about her. And I know I’m not making it up, because Asher felt it, too.

I guess I’ve been sort of hoping she was more like me. Solo by choice, an independent soul who marched to the beat of her own drum. It would’ve been nice to have someone at this school that I actually enjoyed being around. Having a ton of friends wasn’t on my to-do list, but having one good one—that I could handle. And the fact that Asher was interested in her too said a lot. I’d trust Asher’s judgment over anyone else’s.

But it was looking like Brooklyn cared more about fitting in than being an individual.

Bummer.

And this is where I get on my soapbox: Why is everyone at this school so obsessed with popularity? It’s like someone’s social status sets their worth in the world. It’s sickening to see my classmates dress like each other, worry about the same trivial things and shun anyone who is even the least bit unique. There are so many people with such incredible talents at our school, but because it might make others think they’re “uncool,” they bury them deep down instead. It seems like a few kids have even let them extinguish altogether, missing out on some of the biggest opportunities of their lives, just to be a part of the crowd.

That I didn’t get. Why would you want to be like everybody else? Why do so many of my classmates even care what others think about them? Especially when it won’t matter once we’ve graduated and left the microcosm of high school. There are infinitely more important things in the world than being popular…

The other thing that annoys me about this school—well, I suppose society as a whole—is that beauty is one of the biggest factors in popularity. Take The Elite, for example. There’s no doubt every single one of them is gorgeous. Even the guys have smooth skin, striking cheekbones, perfect hair and bodies to die for. And that’s apparently enough to award them top-tier status at our school. But this is where beauty on the outside doesn’t necessarily match up with who they are on the inside…

Because deep down, The Elite are ugly. They’re snobs who are only interested in themselves. They treat everyone else at Clearview like we’re beneath them. They have followers that they make do their bidding. And there are rumors that they’ve done some pretty nasty things to people who got in the way of what they wanted.

So, why does this seemingly sweet, introverted girl want to be a part of that? Does Brooklyn know what she’s getting herself into? Should somebody tell her to watch out?

Most importantly…why do I care?
