Chapter 8

When Adrianna arrived home, she immediately tried to sneak up the staircase and into her room, with the hopes of avoiding one of her mom's famous lectures about safety. Unfortunately luck never seemed to be on her side when it comes to the art of evading Kelly Spencer. Hell if criminals can't avoid her wrath in court, none of her daughters can either.

So just when Adrianna was about to climb up the stairs, her mom's sharp and steady voice shattered the silence in the house. "Adrianna, I know you are in the hallway. Come into the living room at once. You're only delaying the inevitable."

Adrianna groaned internally and slowly dragged herself towards the living room. While she was doing that, she debated on whether she should try to make a run for it. Lily's house wasn't too far from here. Just a fifteen minute walk...

It was definitely tempting. Anything else was better than being put on trial and having to witness one of mom's lectures.

"Young lady I don't have all day," came her mom's voice. "If you don't come in here now, it's only going to get worse later on."

Adrianna hated it when her mom could read her mind without even having to see her face. Apparently that also comes with being one of the best lawyers in the country. She huffed agitatedly before she finally entered the living room where her mom and a man wearing a police uniform were seated.

Adrianna's mouth fell open at the sight of the sandy brown haired cop drinking a cup of coffee beside her mom. She had to rub her eyes to make sure she was seeing things correctly. Her eyes weren't lying to her. There he was still sitting on the leather sofa with his feet propped up against a black coffee table, watching House on the plasma T.V. attached to the wall. She grinned at the sight of him and immediately sprang forward to greet him.

"Hey Uncle Jack! What are you doing here?"

He looked up at Adrianna with his emerald green eyes and smiled warmly at her. "Well I was called by your mom at 2 am in the morning, something about someone's disappearance," he replied. "I don't know if you know who that was."He gave her a pointed look.

Adrianna shrugged and crossed her arms together. "Oh for goodness sakes, don't give me that look when you only heard only one side of the story. I mean, if you just found out that you're adopted by a package someone left on your front door step, you would be angry too," she explained. "I had every right to know this tidbit of information and yet I wasn't informed about any of it at all. So you can imagine my surprise and hurt when I found out that I have been living my seventeen years of life as a lie! That's like telling the person that you're about to marry that you never loved them! It's a recipe for disaster! So don't blame me for my reaction when I've been kept in the dark by my parents for all my life!"

Adrianna breathed heavily as she felt all the pent up frustration release from her body. It felt good to let her emotions out, and there was no better way in getting your anger out then ranting to your favourite Uncle. "

After a minute of silence, Uncle Jack laughed. "Well aren't you something? Even though you aren't blood related to Kelly, you sure as hell act like her when she was your age."

"Jack!" chided Adrianna's mom in irritation. "Number one, we don't swear in this household. Number two, I never acted so impulsive," she stated in a matter-of-fact tone.

Uncle Jack merely snorted and rolled his eyes at his older sister. "Yeah right, you were as stubborn as a bull and quite frankly, still are today. Whenever you got pissed off at mom or dad, you would run away from home for a few days. That and you can never lose at an argument. I honestly don't know how Lance can stand to live with your bickering for the rest of his life because I sure can't."
