Chapter Twenty Three

Back to school, that’s what all those annoying adults say when the summer is officially over and school has to start. Some sad kids are happy to go back and see their friends again, others dread it. Even though school had only been closed for the weekend, Alexis felt that dread. What if the school found out she did it? She pondered. She couldn’t wait to see their faces but she also didn’t want to be on the other end getting shouted at ‘for something she didn’t do’. She was going to play the innocent game. When she wanted to get caught, she made it easy for the teachers. When she didn’t want to get caught, she made it near impossible for them to catch her. If only Fletcher could shut his mouth for a day, then she’d get away with anything.

She dressed up in her casual attire, ate her breakfast and then set off for school. Her mother was still asleep when she went; it was probably the sleeping pills that were taking its toll. Alexis had found out about them after they had dinner yesterday but it wasn’t a crime to not being able to sleep so Alexis let it go.

When she got to school, she searched for any of her friends, old or new, but just found Fletcher. She needed to be hanging out with someone so that she could be acting innocent. She already made her own plan. She walked over to Fletcher with a big grin on her face. He, however, looked horrified. She quickly put an arm around his shoulder and whispered, “Look casual. We’re friends now.” He nodded not quite understanding, but was eager enough to participate in her little game.

Alexis walked around the playground, pretending that she was deep in conversation with Fletcher. He was good at acting, she had to admit. He acted like he was pleased to hang around with her and not be uncomfortable as well. He even gave up on acting weird for a while. After a while, just before the bell rang. A furious Head Teacher marched towards their direction.

“Alexis, come right here!” she shouted. Everyone stopped what they were doing and then pretending that they were too busy to care. It didn’t take a genius to see that their ears were listening and their eyes were full of excitement, a new rumour would be coming out soon. Alexis let go of Fletcher and put on her best innocent eyes look.

“What?” she asked. She put her hands up in question.

“Come here. My office, NOW!” was the reply. Alexis followed the Head Teacher, resisting the urge to shrug. She wanted to act like she had no idea what was going on. So far, she thought it was going pretty well. They entered the office and Alexis was almost surprised to see that Adam was in there too. In all the time that she went to school, she hardly noticed him around. And it was amusing that he was actually wearing a uniform. Only the geeks seemed to be doing that.

The Head Teacher sat in her office chair after giving Alexis a chair to sit on. She gave them both a hard glare before beginning her usual speech. “I know that I normally don’t single out students but you two are my usual suspects so I wanted to check. I would be very disappointed in you Adam if you had any part in this. You’ve been doing so well at school and your behaviour has been improving drastically. All of the teachers had such high hopes for you and we know that life’s been rough before, but we need you to know that we are here for you. Even if you were the one who did this to the school, we would help you.

“You Alexis, on the other hand, have been nothing but trouble. You’ve been getting worse by the day so I think that if it is you, we’re going to have to give you suspension and isolation. Do you want that?”

Alexis shook her head before asking, “But what happened?”

The Head Teacher sighed and then put her hands in her head. She stayed silent for a while, which made everyone in the room feel tense. “You do know that we have cameras in the school?” she said finally.

They both nodded thinking, busted!

“Well, we know that you both did it. It’s all in the CCTV. We just wanted to see your reactions. Consider yourself both suspended for the day; we can’t deal with you two now. At least Adam was a bit more honest. He didn’t snitch on you Alexis, but he said he was sorry for what he had caused. Alexis, you however, are a devious mastermind. We need to give you a tougher sentence. Go back home now!”
