“Please?” Megan tried one last time, rolling over to lock eyes with Gizmo. “Just one tiny glimpse?”
“No,” Gizmo replied defiantly, his resolve yet to break – although strangely, he avoided eye contact with Megan every time he denied her.
Sighing, Megan sat up and took the grey album from Gizmo, settling down next to him and flipping through it again. “What’s so important in it?” she murmured under her breath. Gizmo, however, chose to ignore her question.
“Hey!” Megan was suddenly struck by an idea, “Do you want to play a game?” She upped to her knees, bouncing happily on the bed.
“Sure,” Gizmo smiled slowly, leaning back and resting against the blankets, using his elbow to prop his head up as he looked sideways at Megan.
“Okay,” she continued excitedly, “It’s called twenty questions. Except, we don’t exactly have to ask twenty questions. We just... ask each other questions.” She smiled sheepishly. “I want to get to know you better.”
“I’m up for it,” Gizmo laughed as Megan imitated his posture and adjusted herself to face him, so the two of them were lying down facing each other.
“So who goes first?” Megan asked.
“Me?” Gizmo tried, raising his hand up.
“Okay,” she grinned, “Shoot.”
“What do you think of me?”
Megan gulped. Why did he have to pick such a hard question? She decided to keep her tone light and easy. “Stranger boy,” she teased.
Gizmo frowned. “That’s it?”
“No...” Megan thought for a second, before opening her mouth to speak again. “You’re mysterious.” She smiled, pleased with herself. That ought to sum him up. Megan expected him to question her further on her choice of words, but all he did was frown at himself again before sticking his chin up. “Your turn.”
“What do you think of me?” Megan asked, grinning playfully.
“You’re naïve,” Gizmo brooded, “And funny. Maybe just a bit of innocent; you’re clever, witty, sharp, inquisitive... and cute.”
Megan could feel her cheeks flush a deep red. Did he just say what she thought he said? She returned him the favour and didn’t question him more about his words. “Okay, your turn.”
Gizmo thought for a minute, before smiling widely. “Promise you’ll tell me the truth?”
Megan squirmed. “Maybe?” she tried, earning a laugh from Gizmo. “Okay, okay,” she carried on sheepishly, “I’ll tell you the truth.”
“Have you ever had a boyfriend?”
If it was possible for her cheeks to turn even more red, Megan was sure she represented a very human-like tomato at this stage. “Why do you ask?”
“The truth, Megan!” Gizmo reminded, laughing at her displeasure. She glared at him; he was enjoying her discomfort too much.
“Nope,” she ducked her head, “Never. Why do you ask?”
“Your turn!” Gizmo continued, blatantly ignoring her query.
She shot him another glare, her cheeks slowly calming down. “Have you ever had a girlfriend?” she asked, smiling satisfactorily. There was no escaping this.
“Nope,” he quipped, running a hand through his brown hair. Megan almost cooed; messy brown hair really did look good on Gizmo. But that was when she recalled his answer.
