I saw a young girl,
On a rainy day
She got on her knees
And began to pray
“Oh father, I need thy help
I’ve lost my way,
Please hear my words
In thy name, I pray”
She stood up
And brushed off some rain
The look was still in her eyes
The terrible look of pain
I went to her and asked
“Is there something I can do?”
She shook her head and smiled
“No, I there’s nothing I need from you.”
I begged her to let me help
She started to cry once more
“No one can help me now”
“But how do you know for sure?”
I held out my arms
And gave a little bent
We embraced and she said
“Oh, you are the one he sent”
I held her tight, in the rain
“Who were you praying to?”
She rested her head on my chest
“Anyone would do”
I held the young girl
Until the rain went away
We both sank to our knees
And we both began to pray
“We thank thee for helping
Us find our way
Thanks for hearing our words
In thy name we pray”
We embraced once more
I admitted, “I’ve never prayed”
She smiled once more
“Neither have I, I’m afraid.”
Strangers, we were
Both having lost our ways
Not finding anyone
In the world that is a maze
She took courage to pray
On the rainy day we met
If she had not been on her knees
I think it’s safe to bet
I would not have stopped
Nor took the time to embrace
The young girl in the rain
With the pain on her face
If prayers ever came true
Is it all done by the higher
Or is it sometimes answered
By the embrace of a stranger
