This updo will work well with long hair, it will also work with shoulder length hair.

There are four methods to do this, so you can pick which one works best.

Method 1:

First, comb out your hair so that there are no tangles.

Next, apply mousse to your hair. Remember to not use to much and start from the bottom,=.

Then, tease your hair, which you start st the top of your hair. Teasing your hair is combing it in the opposite direction to make your hair more voluminous.

Opt. Spray hairspray on your hair to make it seem messier.

Finally, flip your hair upside down and gather it in your hands.  This will increase your hair’s volume and help eliminate bumps.

Method 2:

First, scoop your hair into a ponytail. Smooth your crown so there are no bumps. The ponytail can be as high or low as you want it to be. Note that where your ponytail is will be where your bun will sit (ex: high ponytail means a high bun).

Next, grip the ponytail with one hand. Make sure you have a hair elastic ready on that wrist.

Then, pull the hair halfway through the elastic to create a loop. Twist the hair elastic to secure the loop, then wrap it around the loop again as many times as necessary.

Finally, adjust the bun. Pull the loop further through the elastic to make the bun bigger and/or allow some of the strands to fall through. Make the bun wider by flaring the edges out to the sides. Selectively tug on the center of the loop to give it more of a U shape. Pull the ends sticking through the underside of the elastic to the left and right so that they’re more flared out against your head. Tuck any unwanted fallen strands back into the elastic if necessary. If desired, wrap a few loose strands around the elastic and pin them with a bobby pin.

Method 3:

Gather your hair into a ponytail, smoothing out the bumps with your free hand. If smoothing unwanted bumps with your hand doesn’t work, use a wide-toothed comb.

Hold your hair in place with one hand and secure it into a bun with the other.Use one of the following methods:

Wrap your elastic around your hair once or twice to make a ponytail. Coil your hair around the base of your ponytail as if you were putting it in a ballerina bun. Flatten the bun to your head and secure with either the same or an additional elastic (or by pinning it with bobby pins; when done well, this helps the look a lot). Pull out bits and pieces and shake your head until you achieve the desired effect. Use the elastic to secure a ponytail, hold the ponytail up behind you, and brushdownwards towards the elastic until it is quite fluffed up. Spray with hairspray if desired, then loop your hair once using a second elastic; alternatively, if your hair is quite long, wrap it around the base of your pony, then secure it loosely with a second elastic. When you’re done, brush the bun gently to pull out a few tendrils of hair. Loop your hair and wrap an elastic around it once, feed the loose ends of the hair through the loop, and then secure the whole thing with the remaining elastic. The ends will poke out through a messy loop. Loop your hair and wrap an elastic around it once. Feed the remaining hair through the first loop to create a second loop, making sure to hold onto the ends of your hair so that they don’t slide through and undo the second loop. (Note that your first loop may get tighter as you pull your hair through to make a second.) Wrap the remaining elastic over both loops to secure them into a loose knot. Note that your hair must be at least an inch or two past your shoulders to be able to pull off this look. Loop your hair and wrap an elastic around it once, then fold the first loop in half and secure it with the rest of the elastic. Pull the various loops and strands around until you achieve the desired level of messiness.

Method 4: Accentuate the Completed Bun (Optional)

Run your fingers through the front of your hair to loosen it from the elastic and add texture.

Put on a headband (or two). Slide a thin black headband into place two inches away from your hair line. Slide in a second thin black headband three inches behind the first one. If you have blond hair, use two black headbands or darker colored headbands. If you have brown or black hair, try using white headbands or a different light colored headband.

Mist your entire head with hairspray. While spraying the hairspray, make sure you spray it about seven to eight inches away. This will help your messy bun stay put longer.

Play around with your hair to the point where you like it!
