Part 1: The Spell
(England 1604)
My name is Selene Witherhart. I’m a witch and that is the truth. Since I was ten years old my mother told me to keep it a secret and I did. I vowed to never perform magic. I kept my vow serious until today. Today was my sixteenth birthday. Today was also the day I would make a new spell. I have occasionally read through my mother's book of spells that she had hidden. I didn’t know why she kept our true nature locked away and today I would also ask her why before I did the un-thinkable. The spell I wanted to make would bring back the dead. It is against the witch laws (according to my mothers books) but I figured if I changed the rules to my spell it would work.
My true love Adrian Harris was killed two months ago in an un-expected bomb attack in his fathers warehouse. I had been devastated. Walking home alone with out his warm hand locked with mine and his big brown eyes gazing down on me hurt me. Hurt me horribly. I needed him alive again and with this new spell I would make it had to work. True loves kiss would bring back my Addy. I can’t wait to call him that again and run my hand through his soft brown hair. Before I figure out the spell I need to meet my mother for tea.
I sat down at the white wooden chair in our backyard. A steaming cup of rose tea in my hands. “Hello Selene, how’s your day been?” My mother asked as she sat across from me. “Not much. I woke up, bathed, ate my breakfast and went for a stroll.” I said truthfully. My mother nodded. “Why cant we do magic? Why is it such a secret?” I asked quietly. My mother bent closer to me. “If anyone from the government finds out they will send us to Everlasting. It’s an underground world that homes are kind. I don’t want you to be stuck there I want you to live a normal life. Please now stop talking about this.” I sighed. She was trying to protect me. “I miss Adrian.” My eyes started to water, “I know dear but even as a witch we cant do anything.” I wiped at my tears. “I fancied him. He was mine for only a couple of months.” I held my napkin to my eyes. “Enough crying dear. You’ll spoil your pretty face.” She pushed back a strand of my midnight black hair into my bonnet. “Thank you mother.” I took the last sip of my tea and headed toward our small home.
I hurried to my room and locked the door. I will bring back Adrian. I sat down at my vanity and stared at my reflection. Everyone thought I was so pretty. My skin creamy white and my eyes a gorgeous violet. Lastly was my perfectly shaped lips with a natural rose colour. My lips were to die for some said.
I turned away from the mirror and opened up my drawer and took out a silver bowl, a knife, and a magnify glass. I also had out a piece of manila paper and an ink jar with my grey feather.
I wrote down my tools and pulled my bonnet out of my hair. I held the knife to my hair and chopped three inches off. I placed the hair in the bowl and pulled out short brown hair from my envelope. I carefully put in the strands of Adrian’s hair into the bowl. I wrote down each step with a steady hand and walked to my window. I sat the bowl on top of my white window ledge and held the magnify glass over it. The sun soon lit the hair and it started to burn the cut hairs together. The bowl was ablaze when I bent my head to it. Holding my hair back I kissed the fire. I kept my lips pressed to the fire for ten minutes when I pulled away.
My skin was burning and my lips were bleeding and blistering. I wrote down what I did, this time with a shaky hand since my lips were hurting so bad. I pushed the pain away and wrote down my spell. “People die and so we cry. True love never dies. My burnt lips will bring you back to me. A kiss. A life.” My spell should only work if he is my true love. I’m not worried about that though. Adrian is my true love.
