Chapter 7: Here, kitty kitty

I am never ever going to go into that lake again, no way, nuh uh.

How come mommy didn’t come and try to save me? I always call her when Im in trouble, and she never comes and saves me. Maybe she didn’t hear me right.

I stood shuddering in the sunlight, looking for my dress.

Where is my dress, I thought I kept it by this tree? I looked everywhere for it, and it was nowhere. Maybe something took it. Maybe the thing that got my foot in the water was cold and needed to dress.

I looked down at my foot and wiped the blood that poured out of three little scratches. It’s okay, Im not gonna cry.

Only big fat babies cry, and Im not a big fat baby.

It wasn’t cold, so I decided to keep playing like this. I don’t want to go back to my scary room upstairs to look for another dress.

I looked for a rock to throw in the water. I found a few near a bush, so I bent down to get it.

“Meow,” I heard.

A cat! Oh, I love cats!

“Here, kitty kitty kitty…come here, kitty!” I said, crawling behind the bushes and trying to get the cat.

“Meow, meow…”

Kitty! I found it! I felt a furry thing on my hand, and I grabbed it. Oh it’s a kitty!!!

I held it up in front of my face.

This kitty is very strange. It’s completely black like the color of my hair, and it had the weirdest red eyes. It looked strangely familiar, but I can’t remember where I’ve seen it before.

“Meow, meow, meow!” the kitty said. I brushed its fur, and cuddled it to my face. It was soft and sweet smelling.

Im going to keep it, this kitty.

“I think Im going to name you…Kitty!” I said, petting Kitty’s head. She purred and meowed. I hope mommy is going to let me keep it, because mommy doesn’t like animals.

We used to have a doggie named Rover, but he kept on making mommy sneeze, so she threw him away on the street.

I miss Rover. But now I have Kitty.

I picked up the cat and walked back into the house. It was almost dinner time, yum, Im so hungry.

I went through the door and mommy stood there in front of me, blocking my way.

“And what do you think you’re doing, missy?” she said, thumping her foot.

When mommy’s foot starts thumping, Im probably going to get beat.

“And WHERE IN THE WORLD IS YOUR DRESS? Do you think I raised you like this? To run around with no proper clothing like some kind of a savage?!”

I looked down and shook my head no. Then, I showed her the cat.

Mommy’s eyes got real big and she yelled.

“Good Lord, have mercy! Amber, get that thing away from me! That thing right there is the devil’s cat! Don’t you go and play with some strange black cat you find behind the house!”

“But mommy,”

“You know what, if you want to go ahead and play with that cat, go ahead, just don’t come rushing to me when something bad happens.”

Yay, I get to keep Kitty. I went upstairs to my room and Kitty followed me. She started looking at those funny old people on the wall. I shook my head and picked up Kitty.
