Chapter 16

Thais crept slowly forward only moving when the wind moved the trees, Myth had given all of them lessons in unseen movement during their training, their own instincts for stealth were heightened by these lessons. Others crept forward slowly, the darkness from the moonless sky their friend this night. Myth, Rachel, Alren and Breetaya were assisting, they had come out days ago to set up hides in the trees, they would shoot down anyone who tried to flee. The flight of men from the keep, who were here to help control the prisoners until they returned to the keep, had been ordered to keep their feet firmly on the ground for this fight until given the all clear. They had warned the men that in the dark it would be hard to differentiate friend from foe in a moment, this way none of their own would be harmed by friendly fire.

Alanna glanced to see where the others were, Thais was to her left, Rayven was on the other side of him, Serenity and Crystal were on her right while Temperance, Lupa and Bastion were on the other side of the rocky outcrop that the deep was a part of. Susan, Sage and Destiny were setup near the false camp as they and one of the flights were going to try to draw men out of the deep by attacking it.

Alanna glanced up, looking at the positions of the stars, Almost time, move to final positions before attack.

Everyone moved carefully into positions.

Rachel slowly changed her position, moving only when the leaves moved, her cloak helped her blend into the darkness and the hood kept what little light there was from reflecting off her eyes. An arrow was already ready to be drawn; its metal tip was dipped in ash to keep light from reflecting off it. Myth had told her to put a thick layer in the bottom of her quiver, enough to bury the heads in and coated the heads with oil so the ash would stick.

Myth made a deliberate movement drawing Rachel’s eyes, You ready for this? She asked her student.

I knew that one day I would have to kill a sentient being, at least the people I kill tonight… are not good people. Rachel replied.

Alren huffed, she so wished she could talk mind to mind like Myth and Rachel could, she had asked how it was possible. Myth replied that they were pack and being pack meant you could talk mind to mind.
