CHAPTER 13: FALSE PRETENSES

“What?” I asked Chase when I caught him staring at me for the nth time.

We’re still inside his car and after the awkward yet comfortable hug we shared a few minutes ago, I had no idea how to act around him. Actually, I had no idea how to act at all. My morning had been a sloppy dramatic episode of a typical teenage TV series and to be honest, I was expecting my sister to show up at any moment now, throwing questions at me. The reason why Chase and I were spending time in his car instead of going to our classes was still a mystery to me. It’s either he felt guilty with the dare-slash-kiss thing or he did want to be here with me. My heart beat faster than normal when I thought about the latter.

“Let’s just hang out,” he said, still looking at me, making me feel conscious about my appearance and all. What’s happening to me?

“Hang out? Need I remind you that we are at the school’s parking lot, cutting classes? We shouldn’t even be here,” I said as I looked away, my vision instantly filled with the sea of cars lined up in the area.

“Sacred look at me.” I felt his hand squeeze mine. I cringed at the contact, my gaze still fixed at the window.

“Why?” I asked, my nerves were having a battle inside of me.

“I need to ask you a question.”

“Then ask me. I can still hear you, you know,” I replied, minutes away from exploding here.

“Just look at me.” I shook my head, mildly freaking out with whatever it was that’s happening.

“If you don’t look at me you’ll regret it,” he said, obviously threatening me but I didn’t move. If I looked at him, he’d see the fear in my eyes.

“Just say it Chase there’s no need to be dramat—” My gaze fell into a pair of beautiful eyes that was locked with mine three inches away. I heard myself gasp. Turned out he put his hands on either side of my face then spun it towards him. Holy Guacamole.

“What are you doing?” I asked in a low voice it almost sounded like a whisper.

“Trying to get your attention, genius. I told you you’d regret.”

Regret? Wrong word. The one he should’ve used was excited. He’s so near I could take advantage if I wanted too. But I had to bear in mind that this guy played with my feelings. Though I couldn’t be mad at him, a line should be drawn. There’s no way I was going to put myself and my emotions out there in the open again.

“Just say what you want to say okay? No need to be aggressive,” I uttered, desperately trying to sound sarcastic but again, failing miserably.

“Can you…” he trailed off. “Can you forgive me? Not just about last night but with everything. Every single hateful things I said to you. Can we put them all behind us? Please. i'll do anything.”

My jaw was practically on the ground. Was this a dream? I mean, Chase freaking Gray was actually apologizing to me and offering to do anything for my forgiveness. What alternate universe had I gotten myself into? Was I hallucinating? I pinched my nose to be sure. Ouch. It did hurt. I heard him chuckle.
