Prologue

Leaving Everything Behind

It was night, and it was raining hard. All that Angelie Hayes knew was that she needed to get away fast… away from the pain she was feeling.

She was waiting in front of her locker that day wityh books on her hands after school hours were over, as her boyfriend and star athlete, Stephen James, asked her to. Being the star point guard of the basketball team, and having a running streak of three-time interstate champions, he was always practicing late. However, he was running very late. Usually, he comes around 7pm, but now, he was about thirty minutes late, and she needed to go home.

Geez… you could’ve just told me you would be running later than usual… was her irritated thought. She waited for an additional ten minutes, but then, she could wait no longer. She needs to be home now.

The gym was not far from where she was standing. It was just around the bend about ten lockers away. She went in the gym, and to her great surprise, the gym was empty.

That’s odd… though Angelie. Where would he be now? The practice is over, and yet…

That was when she heard noises coming from not-so-wide double doors that had the sign MEN’S LOCKER ROOM plastered above it. Curious, she went closer to have a peek. The door was slightly ajar, enough for one person to slip through, and so she did, and tiptoed close to the source. There were two people inside: a girl and a boy. The boy she recognized as Stephen’s, and the girl was vaguely familiar to her, though her mind can’t tap on it just yet.

“Please, someone might see,” purred the girl, to which Angelie recognized now as one belonging to Courtney Summers, her best friend. “And isn’t Angelie waiting for you?”

“Hmmm, just a moment or two longer,” purred Stephen, obviously enjoying his moment with her. “Angelie can wait for a bit more.”

“But it has been… thirty minutes already…” Courtney protested, but it was weak.

            “Another five minutes…” Said Stephen.

“No, this is wrong…” came another weak protest from Courtney, which was then cut short into an abrupt silence … a silence Angelie can no longer take.

Slowly, without making a sound, she walked into view.

There, at the end of a long row of floor-to-ceiling lockers, stood Stephen, kissing Courtney…

Angelie cannot comprehend what was happening. No, she refused to comprehend it. It was impossible… impossible… that Stephen loved Courtney, but then… it was in plain sight, about ten feet from her…

She was so lost in herself upon seeing the both of them that she never noticed that her books had slid off her hand and landed with an awfully loud thud on the floor. at the sound of Angelie’s things falling, Stephen and Courtney broke apart and stared at Angelie.

“Angelie?” Courtney asked, and that single sentence triggered emotions inside Angelie in an instant…

First was blankness… then shock… then anger… and then pain

“I can explain,” Stephen now said, walking slowly towards Angelie, his arms raised as if a gun was pointed at him, but all that Angelie could think of was that she needed to get out of there fast.
