The silence that surrounded them was suffocating. Bryn wanted nothing more then to get the hell out of dodge. There was no way she could do that without getting into trouble though. She bite her lip and closed her eyes, this wasn’t happening. Braedyn’s father was not sitting in the diner that she worked at. It was all just a dream and any moment she would wake up. Opening her eyes Bryn’s hope at it being a dream were dashed when she locked gazes with the man in front of her.

“I’ll be right back with your drink,” she said hurriedly and booked it back to the front counter. “Hold on just a minute, okay baby?” she said looking over at her son as she filled their drinks.

“Okay, momma” Braedyn grinned settling back into the booth.

Bryn blew out a breath and took the drinks back to the table.

“Are you all ready or do you need a few more minutes?” she asked tapping her pen against the pad in her hand.

Chris couldn’t help but gape at the beauty standing just feet away from him. He knew her. She obviously knew him if the look in her eye was anything to go by. Then there was the kid. He knew for a fact that he didn’t have any mini Chris’ running around but, the resemblance was astounding. Chris didn’t even notice that his friends had order their meals, including his until the girl walked away.

“Dude, don’t you remember who that is?” Greg asked “It didn’t register to me till just now,”

“She looks familiar but, I can’t place her,” Chris admitted

“That’s a shocker,” Paul snorted “That’s the same girl you were hung up over a while back.”

Chris scoffed “I do not get hung up over chicks,”

“Well it has been a while,” Greg said to Paul “It would be Chris to forget,”

“What the hell are you on about?” Chris sighed

“Don’t you remember the girl from Brain Green’s party?” Greg asked

“Brian from high school? Do you know how many girls I hooked up with at his parties?” Chris asked

“No. No, no, no that girl,” Greg said pointing to their waitress who was now standing at the booth the little boy was sitting at. “That’s the girl from Brian’s last party of the summer before we went into our senior year. You were hung up on her for weeks after that.”

“No,” Chris whispered looking at her again.

There wasn’t much he remembered from that night. He had gotten so wasted it wasn’t even funny. He remembered bits and pieces of that night, like a girl he had taken up to one of the vacant rooms. Chris racked his brain for a memory of what she looked like and it slapped him in the face. The waitress, she was the girl. The guys were right, he had been hung up over that girl for the longest time. It was the first time a girl had ever done that to him. Chris knew that the only reason for it was the fact that he had never seen her again.

After Bryn got her son situated she went back to the counter to wait for her orders to be finished. Carla was leaning against the counter staring at her with a smirk.

“What are you smirking at?” asked Bryn

“The look on his face when he saw Braedyn was priceless, I should have taken a picture.” Carla chuckled

“It wasn’t supposed to happen this way,” Bryn whispered

“Actually, it wasn’t supposed to happen at all,” Carla pointed out “How were you supposed to know that he would show up here in Browning after five years. It’s like fate!”
