As I sat at the kitchen table reading my book on etiquette as my mother insisted I do every night before dinner as I had three etiquette lessons a week .
I doubt I will ever have to use it nobody talks like this anymore with such respect and formality towards people.
My friends and I never talk like this but I did it because I knew it made my parents happy. My mother was making dinner and my father was helping her
“Gabriella how is the book coming along?” my father asked
I lifted my head from behind the book and smiled at him “It’s coming along quite nicely what’s on the menu for dinner this evening? I replied
My mother was starting to plate up “We are having a chicken curry”
she answered mum smiled at me this was my favourite meal to eat I wondered if there was an occasion for my favourite meal being cooked.
Dinner is my parent’s favourite part of the day as sitting together as a family at the end of each day discussing how we all went. I put my book down as they brought the plates over to the table and took their seats one each at the end of the table Mother to my left and Father to my right.
“How was your day father?” I asked
It always felt weird because we are the only family I know who speak like this my parents believe in being respectful and this was how we show respect for each other.
“It was a very lovely day at the office I had Jeff from the six floor come up for an interview for the new assistant job that just became available”
“oh Jeff was lovely when I meet him at the Oscar ball last January I do hope you appoint him in the position” my mother replied
I smiled it always made me happy how well they got along a lot of my friends had either a single mother raising them or parents were separated or devoiced it just makes me believe that true love does exist and that one person for life is possible whenever I looked at them.
“Do not fret my dear he has the right skills we have been looking for we are just waiting to inform him he was successful so he appreciates it” My father winked at me as he replied to my mother.
“Gabriella your birthday is approaching soon I was thinking we should go car shopping over the weekend your father agrees it’s time we brought you your own car instead of driving ours all the time when you turn 18 you will be able to just to get in the car and go”
I looked at my mother “Really are you serious, I still have four months to go?”
she smiled and nodded at “Well we need to find the perfect car for you before then”
“Thank you so much Mum and Dad” I got up and ran to the end of the table and gave her a hug
“You can thank me when you have picked the car now go give your father a hug”
I smiled and ran to the other end and hugged him
“You’re more than welcome my darling now sit back down and eat your dinner or it will get cold”
“of course father” I replied
I raced to sit back down I’m so excited I’m getting a car and I get to pick it how amazing are my parents ok I need to calm and relax I have a very important subject to ask my parents about I think getting them on side by talking old fashion is the way to go.
“Mother, father as you know there is the summer formal is approaching and I was hoping I would be allowed to attend as all of my graded have been A’s and I have been asked to go by James Danger he is a really lovely young man and he would have me home by any curfew you wish to put in place so what do you think?
I looked from my mother to my farther
“Jane (that is my mother’s name) didn’t you say we have dance lessons you were enrolling Gabriella in for when we attend Alice’s wedding”
Alice was my best friend outside of my school friends my parents used to babysit her when she was younger so we became such close friends on the weekends we spent most of our time together we still do Alice is 23 so she normally picks me up and we go hang out at the mall as I can’t drive yet. Alice was one of my only friends my parents approved of as most of my other friends were what they called ‘immature’.
“Yes I did Richard” she replied in her loving tone to my father
“Gabriella I am really sorry but you will not be able to attend as the lessons are on a Friday and Saturday nights Alice’s wedding is coming up and Alice has a dance for the brides maids and the best men to perform together and I assume the formal is on one of those night?”
