Chapter Twenty-Two

My Spidey-Senses Come in Handy

The make shift pavilion was crowded with teenagers, all shouting as Jen tried to get everyone to calm down. Noel pushed her way through the crowd with Constantine and Stephan following closely behind, watching her ponytail bounce.

“Oh, it’s you.” Jen sighed as Noel managed to tap her on the shoulder.

“What happened?” she asked worriedly.

“Something breached the barrier,” Jen explained as Constantine and Stephan climbed up on stage to join them. “We thought it was just an animal, it happens sometimes – but the other guys came back, saying Gabriel just…disappeared.”

“That’s not possible!” Constantine said, face going white as the snow that had begun to fall in the dusk.

“Yeah, Gabriel’s not stupid.” Added Stephan “He wouldn’t just disappear, and if anything tried that on him it would be in Tartarus by now.”

“Exactly why he went to check it out.” Said Jen stiffly “He was saying that it was nothing, that someone…” she turned to Noel, and a few others seemed to make a connection in their heads.

Noel looked between Jen and gang of people that had accompanied Gabriel. “What?”

“Gabriel said someone thought it was more than an animal.” The guy that had called Noel Mortal said, stepping forward menacingly.

“You knew.” One girl shouted, and the whole pavilion erupted into shouts once more.

“I didn’t!” Noel looked at Constantine for help, and he moved forward swiftly “I tried to warn him, but he didn’t listen –”

“C’mon.” said Constantine quietly, and he turned to Jen “We’ll go looking for Gabriel. There’s a bit of light left, and the sooner we leave the better.”

Jen nodded and shot Noel a dirty look “Fine, but keep in mind the only reason I’m not kicking her out of the festival is because she’s Gabriel’s guest.”

Together they moved through the tents to the only building around, a tiny hut with a thatched roof. Stephan opened the door and led them inside, flicking on the lights, nearly blinding Noel.

“Whoa.” She breathed, taking in the walls stacked with weapons.

From behind a stack of shields Lola popped out, her dark brown hair a mess from the hat she held in her hands. “You guys going looking for Gabriel?”

“Yeah,” Stephan tossed her a flashlight “Wanna come?”

“Duh, no way you guys would make it without me.” She smirked, checking the batteries, only then noticing Noel. “What’s she doing here?”
