I waited on the kerb for Kieran to collect me, the street eerily quiet for a Saturday morning. The absence of life was most likely due to the rain that drizzled. I pushed my hair into my hood and then shoved my cold hands deep in my jean pockets. What I wouldn't do to see the sun.

Beth had called umpteen times asking if it was OK to wait with me abd of course I'd objected umpteen times. She'd only get over-excited and embarrass herself. If she wanted to have time with Kieran she could ask him herself and I wouldn't care because this wasn't a date.

I folded my arms, barring in some of my body heat. I tapped my feet in a forming puddle and my reflection rippled as I looked at my plain self. Jade eyes judged me. Was I really doing this despite Sophia's warning?

It was bang on eleven o'clock when I saw it speeding up the street. Its black ferocity sent shivers down my already chilled spine. The Audi TT growled. The windows were tinted and still I could feel Indigo's presence. The ferocity of Kieran's mechanical beast alluded to me into believing he was tamer, less threatening. I could only hope that was true.

The black beast stopped at my feet with an elegant skid. Kieran opened his door and slid out before I could even make my move to the door. I hoped that he had not observed me recoil.

"Sorry it's a bit in your face but Jessica's using the R8 and Mack's out in the Land Rover so it was either Michael's TT or Andrea's black Micra Convertible." He was so off handed. I squinted at him.

"What's with the number of cars your family have? Most people find two sufficient." I eyed the masterpiece of machinery. He looked hesitant and leaned against the car.

"Let's just say when it comes to my family, we don't like being out-raced." A menacing smile slithered across his face reminding me of the eminent danger I may have been in. "Shall we go?" Kieran offered his hand but I refused it giving him a rueful grin. He shrugged and led me to the other side of the car. In his stride he made a subtle effort to brush my skin, having the desired effect of making me shiver. He opened the car door for me; cue my common sense scolding me.

It was a voice that crept slyly to the forefront of my mind and screamed at me to stop with the nonsense. I searched Kieran's face for any hint of malice, something that suggested he was out to hurt me.

There was nothing suspicious in those faded indigo eyes - only the confirmation of what I already knew.

I ducked down into the car and then he shut the door, never breaking eye contact. The tinted windows kept me shielded from all on-looking eyes but Kieran's. I knew he could see. I knew he was watching me.

Gracefully, Kieran slipped into the car. I exhaled and played with my bag strap.

Breathe Evans.

Once he'd belted himself in Kieran sparked the engine, hit the clutch, shifted gear and we were off. I hadn't intended to grip the sides of the seat quite so tightly.

The Audi moved swiftly along the roads. It swerved and glided as if on air. I was still biting my lip; the taste of blood fresh on my tongue. At least Kieran wasn't a vampire.

This was the moment. This was where courage and complete stupidity would collide and make me vulnerable. But I had no choice, Sophia had assured me of that.

"I have a question," I said. A gentle blush powdered my cheeks. Kieran indicated left and chortled.

"Go on Evans, no need for shyness." It was out of character.

"I don't think you're going to like it," I replied.

"I'm sure I'll survive." So was I considering he was already dead. At least I had warned him.
