Chapter Twenty-Eight
“This is your fault Colton!”
My brain jolted awake from the sudden intrusive voice. A pain shot through my bitten shoulder, stilling me as I began waking up. I couldn’t move my body, only listen to the argument that was going on around me.
“You did this!” I recognised Ray’s angry voice, “How could you just leave her there on her own?”
“Ray, stop.” That was Toby, but I heard Ray huffing and puffing like an angry dragon ready to shoot flames from his mouth. I could imagine him even pacing.
“I didn’t know this was going to happen to her. I wasn’t going to let someone get away with almost shooting her. I thought she would be safe in my office,” Colton argued back, his voice sounding on edge.
Ray laughed sarcastically, “You’re unbelievable! My sister is fighting for her life after getting beaten to shit and bitten because you didn’t take care of her. You should have made sure she was safe… do you know what your problem is, you’re too absorbed in yourself to care about anybody else.”
“Ray!” Toby shouted again, obviously trying to calm down my brother.
“Stay out of this, Toby.” Ray growled and I actually felt my stomach turn from the fierceness of his words.
“Guys,” Mike said, “arguing about this isn’t going to help Layla. Everybody just needs to calm down.”
I fought to open my eyes, to see what was going on, but nothing was happening. I wish I could see, but I felt less scared knowing I was in Colton’s bedroom.
“Mike is right.” Colton mumbled and I felt a warm hand in mine. I knew immediately it was him by the tingles that were now shooting up my arm from his touch, "This isn't the right time to talk about this."
“Alpha,” A new voice called out from across the room, interrupting the argument, it didn’t sound familiar.
“Did you follow the scent Andy?” Colton asked quickly.
“Yes sir.”
“And, who did this to her?” Colton demanded and the room became quiet.
“We followed the scent until it disappeared past Ironer Bay. We suspect the moonwalker that did this to Layla was picked up in a car, so we could no longer follow it. We decided to go back to your office, to search for anything else... We discovered another scent, one we missed.”
“Another scent… who?” I felt my insides twist up and tighten.
“This scent was recent sir, like the other, and it led straight to Jenny.” The room went even quieter, I was sure if you dropped a pin to the floor you could hear it.
“Was Jenny in your office at all today Colton?” Toby broke the silence.
My heart curled in anger at even the thought of her anywhere near Colton in his office. I was fed up of that bitch, this is all her fault.
“No, she never goes in my office.”
“…If she was involved in this, I will kill you.” Ray’s threat rang in my ears harshly. I needed to wake up, now. I tried moving but found I couldn’t. Something inside of me was screaming out in anger, boiling my blood past crazy.
The pain in my shoulder. I felt that hot I wanted to scream, “I think Layla is waking up.”
“Layla?” Colton asked, his voice was close. I could feel his hand on my forehead, lightly brushing my hair away. I wanted to see him, no, I needed to see him.
Finally the lock keeping my eyes closed sprang free and I was able to open my eyes and take in my dim surroundings. The lamp that was on in Colton’s room blinded me for a moment but my eyes adjusted quicker than they usually would.
There were five people in this room and it startled me for a moment, but I soon relaxed when my eyes met Colton’s dark brown ones, those eyes that melted my insides.
“Hey baby,” he tried to smile but couldn’t. He looked so pale as he placed a kiss on my cheek, his lips sending tingles shooting through my face like electricity bolts. I always had a reaction whenever Colton kissed me, but this one was more intense and it left me wanting more. “Ray is here. You’re safe.”
My brother stepped forward and I moved my eyes over towards Ray to see him looking worried, his brown hair was dishevelled as he looked at me with watery eyes. It was an expression I’d never seen on his face before.
“Hey,” he mumbled, crouching down beside me, “Are you okay?"
