Chapter 26

Final Hour

I stayed up late that night, waiting to see if Titus would come. After not showing up at Beaver's Lake, I was sure he would. The lights from downstairs had already been off for awhile now. I glanced at my phone to see it was close to twelve. I had been going over what I should do all day, and like a coward I was taking the easy way out.

A little tapping rhythm came from the window. I smiled, though nothing could really make me feel happy tonight. Climbing off the bed, I walked over and opened it.

Titus leaned in for a kiss, but I pulled away.

He looked at me confused. "What's wrong?"

"My dad knows," I whispered. I took a deep breath. "We have to break up."

Titus gritted his teeth as a tension filled his body. "Why?"

I shrugged. "My dad says we have to wait. He was really mad when he found out we'd been doing things."

"You told him?" Titus snapped.

I rubbed my arm. "I can't lie to him anyone. My parents have never been disappointed in me before. I didn't know what to do."

"So you're just going to go along with it? That it." He looked me in the eyes. "Just like that, we're done."

"They're my parents, Titus. My dad made it clear that he's not going to let me see you."

"Most teens don't really give a damn if they piss their parents off. God, Aden." He rubbed his forehead. "Why can't you for once stand up for yourself."

"I'm sorry." I bowed my head. "He said we could be together after I graduate, if we wanted to." I peeked up at him.

"What if I don't want to?" He snapped. Rolling his eyes, he looked away. "Still the same, Aden. You'll always be fine with letting everyone walk all over you." He crawled to the edge of the roof.

"Titus wait." I stuck my head out the window. "I'm sorry. School will be starting soon, and when I'm done we can get back together. I want to be with you, but if my dad found out."

"I don't want to wait." He swung his legs over the edge.

"Please," I begged. "I'm sorry. Next summer-"

"There won't be an next summer," he snapped, glaring at me. "I loved you, Aden. I thought you felt the same."

"I do," I whispered. "I do love you."

"It's not the same. It never has been, right?" Laughing to himself, Titus shook his head. "Hearing you say it almost made me think that it could be though." He glanced back at me. "Bye, Aden." Titus slid off the edge.

"Titus, wait!"

I didn't get a reply and simply saw a large wolf run off into the neighboring field. I sunk to the floor and clasped my forehead. "What have I done?" I wanted to be with him, but I'm not like everyone else. I have a conscious. I couldn't lie to my parents anymore.

I hide my face like the coward I had turned out to be.

I shuffled down the stairs the next morning and into the kitchen.

My mom gave me a sad smile and waved me over. "I'm sorry, sweetheart."

I nodded. "We broke up."

"Oh my god," she breathed, hugging me. "Aden." She rubbed my back and rocked me for a moment.
