The final bell rings.
Hope fills my body as I hurry out of the classroom and hurtle toward the gates. If I'm fast enough, I might just make it out of here. Make it away. Make it to freedom.
But this hope fades as two boys come out of nowhere and walk behind me. Their friends follow closely, giving each other knowing smiles. I feel fear and dread rise inside of me. But what I feel, I try hard not to show. I walk slowly, my legs shaking harder with every step.
I walk down a side road. Most of the boys hang back, so I just have the one following me down the short, straight alley that has become a labyrinth.
I look down at the floor, and think hard about how I could get out of this. Maybe, if I run, I could just get away safely. But just as I am beginning to quicken my pace, a hand grabs my wrist, and shoves me against a wall. I struggle for everything I am worth, but the boy doesn't relent.
"Let me go!" I shout.
"You know I can't do that." the boy's deep, menacing voice says. "Anyway, he'll be here soon."
"I need to go," I say, appropriating the boy's growling voice. "You will let me go right now, or I will-"
"You'll what?" the boy cackles. "Tell your mummy?"
My eyes sting at his remark. He knows I haven't got a mummy to tell. I thrash harder. "You will let me go, or I will yell rape!" I scream at him.
"Well, well, well," a voice shouts down the alley, making me stop and shudder with fear. "What have we got here?"
Curtis. He was going to kill me.
Standing up for yourself is a good thing, right? I thought so, too. It's just a shame that Curtis doesn't think like that. I stood up for myself, and now that we're off of school grounds, he's going to kill me.
Curtis swaggers over to me, and his gang begin to close in. I close my eyes, and pray that a superhero will swoop in and save me. All I can see when I open my eyes is the boys' uniforms merging as one. I just sit, trembling, and wait. Wait for the first blow. Wait for my death.
"Hey!" A voice booms, flooding my body with relief. "What's going on here?"
The boys begin to laugh, and turn around. Behind them stands a tall boy with lightly tanned skin and cheek length black hair. He has, beautiful, mysterious eyes, and wears a serious expression. He's really muscly, and looks like he could knock out all of these boys with one punch. My hero.
The look on the boy's faces changes from hapiness to fear. "Nothing," they mumble, and begin to split.
Seeing them distracted, I take my opportunity and run. Run as far away as I can. I stop by the large bins outside the school, and because I can still hear their shouts, I crouch behind one, panting for air.
That boy. That boy saved me. They were all going to kill me, and he saved me. A complete stranger.
All the boys run past, shouting and cursing. I sigh in relief as I see their retreating figures, and step out from behind the bins. But as I do, I bump into something, and fall back down.
"Sorry," a familliar voice says, "I didn't see you there."
I look up, scared that it could be one of those boys. Curtis.
But no, it's the boy that rescued me. "Sorry," I say, "and thanks for that. They were going to kill me, and if it wasn't for you-"
"Don't mention it," the boy says. "I'm Toby, by the way." He holds out his hand.
"I'm Francesca," I reply, letting him lift me up.
"A pretty name for a pretty girl." he compliments.
"Thanks," I say. "Are you new around here? I don't think I've seen you before."
"Yeah, I'm living with my aunt," Toby replies. "I'm really sorry, but could you tell me where Acton Street is?"
"Yeah, I live there. Come on, I need to get my little sister from school. I'll take you there soon."
We walk through the streets and talk about our lives. He tells me about where he comes from, but I felt he was holding back on something. I told him about my younger brother, Danny, and my little sister, Rhianne. About how my mother was dead, about how she'd been murdered two years ago.
"I'm...sorry," he says.
