Cruel Fate

Chapter 3

'Boundless Changes'

Amelia was sipping from her glass of Chardonnay when a sudden knock at the door interrupted her peaceful moment. Putting the fine piece of crystal down on the coffee table after swallowing the pale yellow liquid, she uncrossed her legs and slowly stood up. Smiling, she walked to the hallway, opened the front door and welcomed her friend with a quick peck on the cheek. “Good evening, Megs,” she greeted merrily.

It was Friday night. Normally, (if anything could go right in her life, which unfortunately never happened) Amelia would’ve joined her friend earlier that day to go to George’s farewell party. Sadly, she hadn’t been able to find a sitter in time. It really shouldn’t have been a surprise. The girl that usually looked after Landon quit two weeks ago.

It seemed to be damn hard to find someone decent and trustworthy these days that didn’t quit after a few weeks or decided not to show without a call in advance. Amelia didn’t like to leave her son behind with someone, certainly not if she didn’t trust the person. That left her with no choice but to stay home with Landon. It was a hit on her social life, but being a mother would always be her priority. There would come a time where she wished Landon would stay home more often. The thought scared Amelia. She liked having her boy close.

“Evening, Lia,” Megan returned, following her to the living room. “You didn’t miss anything important. It was just a stiff gathering of suits.” The woman’s exclamation made Amelia laugh and shake her head in amusement. It was a typical Megan comment. “Okay, that’s not true,” Megan muttered after a moment of thought. “You did miss handsome Mr. Hardman in a gorgeous suit.”

“You’re too much,” Amelia grinned as she returned to the couch and offered Megan the glass of wine that had been waiting for her for over twenty minutes now. Amelia hoped the liquid was still sufficiently cool.

“Seriously, honey, he looked divine. Too bad Paul joined me at the party. It would’ve been rude if I kept ogling my new boss with my husband at my side,” Megan sighed. “Still, I couldn’t help but shoot a few glances at that fine ass. Damn, Lia, the man is sexy.”

“How does Paul survive with you as his wife?” Amelia wondered teasingly as she smirked at her friend. Megan didn’t bother to hide her attraction to other men. That didn’t mean she’d ever act on it. The woman was loyal, she’d never betray Paul like that. Megan was a lot of things, but she wasn’t an unfaithful wife.

“He survives because we have an awesome sex life. He’d never get as much action with any other woman. We’ve been married for seven years and we still make out on the couch like horny teenagers and have sex like crazy,” Megan shamelessly shared.

Amelia blushed and shook her head. “I can’t believe you just said that. Scratch that, I can believe it, I just don’t want to hear it.” At home, talking about ‘intercourse’ had been a taboo. Amelia had to figure out everything on her own. Something that hadn’t always been fun.

The first time she got her period she’d just turned twelve. The naïve girl she was, she’d thought she was bleeding to death. Tears streaming down her flaming cheeks, she’d run straight to her grandmother house and told the woman she thought something was terribly wrong with her. The woman carefully explained she’d become a real woman that day. It was the most humiliating and scary day of her life. She’d never forgive her mother for not giving her any kind of warning.

“You’re a prude, Lia. There’s nothing to be ashamed of if you still have sex on daily basis with your husband. It’s something people should be proud of.”
