Chapter 5
Diane’s POV:
I enter the beautiful church with my hand linked into Clarence’s hand. Clarence is my boyfriend of four years, we have been dating since Junior high – he has been the most amazing boyfriend.
The church is adorned with white Gardenia’s and pink Geraniums, and the pathway leading to the front of the church is covered by a white carpet with petals of Peony’s. Clarence takes a seat on one of the church benches whilst I link arms with Derrick in his black tux and cerise pink tie and me with my matching cerise dress, both taking the part of maid-of-honor and best man striding along the pathway, making our way to each end.
All guests rise to their feet, daddy, Derrick and my eyes stare at the pathway in anticipation as we here the announcement for the bride. A vague white image slowly comes into clear view revealing Angie looking beautiful in her white wedding gown. I look into daddy’s direction and he can’t take his eyes of her and can’t stop his smile from growing larger – this really made me feel so happy for him.
Angie finally came to a halt beside daddy. Pastor Samson asks the guest to be seated and once everyone is settled, he begins with the formalities. Dad and Angie exchange vows and they look so good together.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------It’s been a week now and I feel as if Derrick and Angie have always been my family, she has even put a stop to me calling her Angie, she says it should always stay as mum from now on. I even heard Derrick calling daddy Dad the other day. Isn’t it weird how some people can just become so close so quick?
“Hey beautiful…”Clarence leans onto the door frame of my room and looks at me whilst I put on my earrings
“Hey baby” I walk over to him and give him a quick peck on his lip whilst still trying to put my earrings on
“I’m hungry, so can we please go down and leave already…before I die of starvation? Everyone is ready and waiting for you, your dad and Derrick are glued to the basketball game and your mum is sitting there uninterested in the game”
“Okay okay lets go” I tell him whilst grabbing my purse
When we get downstairs, I see the exact picture Clarence painted with his words a few minutes ago – Dad and Derrick watching the game whilst mum is looking horribly bored!
“Okay guys the birthday girl is FINALLY ready” Clarence announces stressing on the word “finally” and lets out a big sigh at the end
I rolled my eyes at him “I weren’t that long”
We all pack up in daddy’s car – Derrick and Clarence on both side and me in the center like a filling in a sandwich!
As we drive to the restaurant, daddy and mum enjoy the soothing blues music, to be more specific – the soothing music of Mama Yancey. Derrick just stares at the darkness through the window, looking bored as ever! Whilst Mr. Clarence next to me tries to be a bit naughty as he begins to rub his hand against my thigh, I am so on edge right now because we are seated behind daddy – just one look at his rear view mirror and I’m dead! So I quickly smack his hand off my thigh. A few minutes later and Mama Yancey has me yawning
“Glad to know im not the only one who thinks this is more like a lullaby” Derrick snorts out with a small laugh
Daddy turns the volume down “Son, if you can’t appreciate this kind of music…then you don’t know what music is”
“I appreciate MUSIC but just not the type that makes you want to go to bed”
Before these two guys get further into their argument, mum stops them
“You guys, why do you have to debate on every topic?”
“Angie, it’s not like we are fighting, we are just having a discussion about something we both enjoy for different reasons” dad assures her
“Yeh mum, we are having a discussion about something we both enjoy, mine for the right reason and his for the totally wrong reason” Derrick quickly jokes
“Ha-ha” daddy says sarcastically
With one smooth turn, we enter the parking lot of this elegant restaurant. Once daddy finds a parking spot, we all hop out the car and head to the entrance of the restaurant
“Reservations for?” the pleasant guy at the front desk asks daddy
