Chapter Thirty Two

"Was it done by a werewolf or human?"

I stood by Kendall's side, covered in a coat of white, as he conversed among the guards. We were in the wing where they slept and where an attack had occurred. The others seemed slightly shaken but mostly determined to find who was responsible.

"We can't determine that yet, Prince Gordon. His neck was sliced open with a weapon of some kind. He bled to death."

Kendall seemed frustrated with the whole situation and lack of knowledge. Once again, someone came in without anyone's notice. It only made sense for the person to work as a guard or to have particular skill in the disguise area. But that was just my personal opinion.

"Was anything found missing?"

"No, Prince Gordon. However, we have yet to search his entire room. I'll notify you when we do so."

It was Kendall and Lance, who'd gotten his former status back after I talked to a certain someone, who were discussing all of this. Guards in uniforms went in and out of the guard's room, while guards off duty solemnly watched. For once, the wing was without noise.

The guard's lifeless body had been placed outside the hall until someone was able to pick him up and bring him to his family. There was a sheet that had been gently placed over him out of respect.

I was curious as to why someone would want to kill this guard in particular. He hadn't been high in the rankings, and no one seemed to hold some deep hatred towards him. Overall, he looked to be an average man.

"Be sure to do so. Until then, I have business to attend to," Kendall replied, walking away. I followed, my necklace swaying back and forth as I did so.

We were close to the conference room, which had been renovated. There were more guards standing by than usual, looking attentively in every direction. Nolan also stood there, hands in his pockets, a grin on his face when his eyes met mine.

I rolled my own, relief swimming through my veins. Nolan looked completely fine and even had on his old mischievous grin. Just the sight of it made me want to smile back as I remembered how often that grin had gotten us into trouble.

I noticed Kendall looking down at me, a fraction of a frown on his face. "You are not joining us, Snowflake. There is a multitude of guards in the room to watch over me," Kendall stated, and I growled lowly. Jealous bastard.

"I am sorry, love. I will-" he started softly, but I huffed and walked away from him and towards Nolan.

"Hello, my darling. It's a great disappointment to hear you won't be joining us. Who am I supposed to stare at while the Gordon boy babbles?" Nolan teased as he knelt down.

His hands found their way into my coat, and I nuzzled him. He replied by running his nose along mine, a typical, affectionate greeting among werewolves.

"I seem to have forgotten how it feels to be near you. I find myself missing it," Nolan whispered, nipping my ear.

I growled lightly and pulled away, snapping my teeth as his hand. Nolan laughed, but it wasn't as full as usual.

"Ah, so another claims you? Is that why you won't let me greet you as I used to?" Nolan asked, and I watched as his eyes flickered and narrowed in Kendall's direction before he instinctively growled.

I growled back, my teeth bared and the hairs on my back bristling. Nolan was displaying possession towards me, something he no longer was allowed to do. He'd given up that right a long time ago.

I started to move away in the direction of my room, hearing Nolan say, "Goodbye for now, my flower."

I just ignored him, continuing along my way. Just as I was about to turn the corner, I looked back at Kendall, whose eyes were expressionless. I was sure he wasn't happy after that display, but I wasn't going to spend my time worrying about it.

I quickly shifted once I made it to my room and threw on some clothes. If Kendall was too jealous to allow me to do my job, then I surely wasn't going to waste a perfectly good day.

I spent several hours talking to the guards around the Indoor Stables, hoping to befriend them. I had yet to figure out a plan, but I was hoping they would help somehow. But it was getting me nowhere. They were about as cold as Kendall was to strangers.

I was leaning against the wall, my brain running dry. These guards were both abundant in number and too alert. At this rate, I would never get past them. But I couldn't just give up.

I suddenly felt a stream of air sneak into my ear, making me jump and turn around. I found myself an inch away from a pair of contrasting amber eyes. It was then that I realized just how long I had been speculating.

Nolan laughed softly, and I huffed at him, watching yet another guard call it a day as he locked up another werewolf for the night. He didn't look bothered as he entered the room, becoming surrounded by dozens of deadly creatures. He, of course, had complete faith in the walls of steel.

"Flower, do you remember how I used to spend hours holding you, neither of us talking sometimes? We were simply enjoying one another," Nolan said casually, and I rolled my eyes.

"Is there a point in you bringing up our past?" I asked him, not answering. Nolan already knew I remembered those moments. I used to plead him to just hold me and he would pretend it was a burden, but he enjoyed each one as much as I did.

"You see, when I held you, I watched you. I would watch you laugh at something I said or frown in thought. I had the pleasure of watching every emotion you've ever experienced during those few years run across your face," Nolan concluded, and I stared at him blankly, not comprehending.

Nolan only laughed before he leaned towards my ear, tucking my hair behind it. "I know exactly what you're doing, my darling Amaryllis."

I pulled away, trying not to tense as his use of my name. He couldn't possibly know. I hadn't breathed a word about it, not even when I was alone.

Nolan's eyes glittered with mischief before he stuck out his hand. "I'm in."

*For those of you who didn't catch it, Amaryllis is Snowflake's name.
