A Drabble I think.

The silence was thicker than the darkness. It seemed to gather between his feet. It swam up his legs, wrapped around his chest and constricted his breath. Floating up, it burrowed its way through his ears. Then, as a thousand drill bits, it began to tear, consume, rend his mind.

Slowly, nearly as slowly as it came, the silence dissipated. He was certain that it was just an effect of his failing sanity. That his imagination was filling the unbearably empty room around him. Surely the soft scratching of rodent claws couldn’t be anything but an invention of his mind.
