Things That Weren't Quite Good Enough

Hey guys here's a new story for you.

You do not know how much it pains me to have to put a long title on one of my stories, but you've got to do what you've got to do aye?

Anyway hope you enjoy :)

Chapter 1

"No."

"Yes."

"NO."

"YES."

"Oh for God's sake will you kids just shut up for once?" My dad shouted from the living room.

"NO." Both me and Reuben answered at the same time, I glared at him, there was no way on earth that he would ever, ever get to go in my room.

It was just not happening.

Just because his dad and my dad were best friends did not mean he got free assess to my life.

"Come on bambi, you know you want to." He asked me, trying to be seductive.

"NO." I shouted, slamming the door in his face. "AND DON'T CALL ME BAMBI!" I screamed after him.

I could hear him laughing as he walked down the hall towards the guest room.

He had been staying with us for nearly a week now due to his family problems, his dad had lost his job and he didn't have a mum so my dad being the 'kind and caring' person he is offered to lend them the guest room.

We weren't rich, what with my mum having to work abroad and my dad having a low pay job but we did have one spare room.

Said one spare room I usually used when I had a sleepover since it was bigger than my bedroom, but thanks to Reuben and my stupid dad I couldn't have any sleepover until they left.

Well technically I could but I didn't want to have Reuben rape any of my friends.

I remember the weeks I had spent trying to persuade my dad not to let them stay with us. He had just told me again and again not to be stupid, quote 'Reuben won't rape any of your friends, to be honest your friends are more likely to rape him' he had told me laughing.

It was true, Reuben was the school player and my friends were more than likely to try raping him.

I laughed at the memory of Carmel, one of my best friends flirting with Reuben yesterday before school and begging me to let her sleepover.

She has had a crush on Reuben since primary school, whereas I had hated him since the first day when he called me bambi.

I still remember his exact words, 'I'm going to call you bambi because your small, lanky and you don't have a mum.' He had said, obviously pleased with himself.

After that I had gone and cried in the toilets.

When I was young I barely ever saw my mum, even now I only saw her once every few months and that had upset me.

Now him calling me bambi just annoyed me but when I was younger it hit a nerve.

"Adele are you ready?" My dad asked, lightly knocking my door before coming into my room.

"No." I answered grudgingly, tonight my dad had planned for us all to go out together to some restaurant so we could all get to know each other better.

"Why not honey bee? I thought you would want to go out." He replied, obviously upset at my lack of enthusiasm.

"I do, just not with Reuben." I answered my dad sighed and sat down on my bed, patting the space next to him.

"He's not that bad you know, if you get to know him." He told me, I had heard these words so many times before I almost knew them off by heart. "He's quiet the gentleman." I scoffed, calling Reuben a gentleman was like calling a lamp a chair.

It was stupid. "You just need to get to know him better, which is what you are going to do tonight." He continued.

I didn't want to get to know Reuben better, I didn't like him and I never would.

No matter what my dad said he was anything but a gentleman and I intended to stay as far away from him as possible. "Come on get ready." My dad finished as he left the room, closing the door firmly behind him.

I walked over to my wardrobe and pulled out the only evening dress I owned. It was a deep purple dress with a tulip skirt and thin straps.

It wasn't a very expensive dress, we couldn't afford anything too posh, but I loved it all the less.

I slipped it on along with the only pair of heels I owned and started doing my hair and make-up. I couldn't do much considering I only owned a cheap pair of straighteners and some mascara so I left my short but thick dark hair wavy and added some mascara to my already black eyelashes.

I looked in the mirror, my abnormally pale skin and big brown eyes went well with my purple dress.

"Looking good bambi." A voice said, I looked to the door to see Reuben leaning against the door frame.

Surprisingly he didn't have a smirk on his face like usual which surprised me.

Then he laughed, spoiling my good mood as he left.

"I HATE YOU." I called after him.

"LOVE YOU TOO." He called back, angering me even more.

I grabbed my think black jacket and ran down the stairs, even though I was wearing heels.

I had owned this pair of heels for years now and I wore them so often I could probably do a front flip in them if I tried.

At the bottom of the stairs my dad and Reuben's dad Corbin were chatting casually.

Reuben was leaning against the wall at the bottom of the stairs.

"Ready honey bee?" My dad asked, Reuben hid a snigger and I glared at him.

"All set dad." I replied.

"Good, let's go then." With that we all followed my dad towards the car and the hell that was surely not far away.
