As soon as she had put the car in park, we all jumped out of our seats. Jake, Myra and Nash unsecured the ladder, while Liam, Keegan and I attached the hoses to the nearest fire hydrants. Myra, Nash and I put on our oxygen masks, and headed into the building, to search and rescue trapped people. Liam, Keegan and Jake hosed down the building, while we went inside.

We walked inside, and spread out. We could communicate with each other through our radios, unless the smoke overwhelmed us. Nash searched the second level of the motel, while I searched the first level with Myra. Several of the doors were wide open, but there was one at the end of the hall that was shut. Myra slowly crept up to the door, and put her ear against it. "There's someone in there!" she cried. She yelled to the person inside the room, "Get as far away as you can from any windows, and stairs. Back away from the door, I'm going to break it down!!" We heard shuffling and coughing. "I'm pretty sure it's safe to break it down now, Myra." I said. Myra took my axe and started to hack away at the door.

The door finally splintered, and we stormed through. We scanned the main room and didn't see a single soul. We headed straight to the bathroom, and inside was a small child. He was dressed in tattered clothes, and was coughing badly. Myra walked swiftly to him and scooped him into her arms. "You're safe now, little one, don't cry. " I heard her coo to the child. We exited the room, and I radioed Nash, " We've got a little boy, we are heading out to the lot now." "I'm through up here, I didn't find anyone. I'll meet you out there." Nash radioed back. The ceiling above us started to crack, I radioed Nash, "Get out of here now!! The floor you are on is going to collapse!!" I got no response. "Myra, head out to the parking lot, stop for nothing! I'm going to find Nash!" I said sternly. "But.." Myra protested. "Go! I will meet you in the lot with Nash, I promise!" She nodded and dashed away towards the parking lot.

I headed up the stairs to the second level, while screaming for Nash. I heard the floor crack, I knew I didn't have much time. "Nash!!" I called. The cracking continued, "Dammit, Nash!! Where are you?!" I yelled. I heard a faint cough. I rushed to where I thought it can from. I gasped as I saw where Nash lay. He was trapped under a ceiling beam, his oxygen mask was on the floor out of his reach. Avoiding debris, I rushed to Nash's side as quickly as I possibly could. I snatched up his mask and secured it to his face. He was hardly breathing. I dragged the beam off of him, and set it across the room. I bent over Nash, starting to get him over my shoulder, when I noticed he was hurt. He had three large splinters of the beam, impaled through his abdomen. He needed medical attention as soon as possible. I picked him up bridal style, and hurried to the door.

I leapt through the door, as the doorframe crashed to the floor. I ran down the steps, quickly, and barely made it out the door, before the building collapsed. I sprinted up to the ambulance, and screamed for a stretcher, and an EMT. Nash was taken from my arms, and laid on the stretcher. He was gasping for air, even with the oxygen mask on. One of the EMTs turned pale, as he turned to me. "He has a punctured lung, we need to operate immediately, if possible." the EMT said urgently. With tears in my eyes, I simply nodded. Nash was whisked away, and out of my sight in under a minute. I couldn't ride with him in the ambulance, because I wasn't a relative, or significant other. All I could do was watch him be taken away.

Keegan, Liam and Jake were huddled around Myra, so I walked away from the remaining EMTs, towards them. Myra looked as if she were holding a baby. The boy we rescued, was about four or five. He was too big to be the bundle she was holding.. I reached her side and gave her a warm hug. As she looked up at me, I noticed she been crying. The bundle in her arms was a baby, no more than six weeks old, not even two months. A look of astonishment crossed my face. "Where did.. Wha.. How?!" I stuttered. Myra started to sob, "The boy, he.. carry.." she stuttered. "Shh, shh, it's okay, you're okay," I said softly trying to calm herd down. I led her away from the crowd of people, and was able to calm her down enough, so she could tell me what happened.
