I ran one of my frail, old hands on the cold, gray granite. I traced the letters with wavering fingers as I felt tears prick up at the back of my eyes…

It had been years since he had gone… yet my heart continued to yearn to be in his presence, to have him hold me and kiss me and live this life with him by my side…

I sighed and allowed the tears to trickle down my cheeks as a wave of memories engulfed me.

The first time we met, our first date, our first kiss, our first fight… the first time we said those three, faithful words.

“Oh no…” I heard a voice, so much like his mumble, “Please don’t cry.” I sniffled and turned around to gaze into a pair of brown eyes that were like an abyss of emotions.

“Oh Reece…” I murmured.

“Shh… Don’t cry.. It’s alright…He’s in a better place now.” he said as he wrapped his strong arms around my timid, trembling frame and held me in his warm embrace, “Hush now… don’t cry.”

I sobbed and he patted my back, his mellifluous voice lower than a murmur but higher than a whisper reminded me of him.

Of the boy who had stolen my heart all those years ago and never returned it…

Of the boy who had promised to stay by my side but had instead left me to fend for myself, alone.

I wiped my tears and pulled away to gaze into his brown eyes that held flecks of pale silver that reminded me way too much of him, the boy I loved.

“I never told you about him did I?” I asked him, my voice had aged along with my body and I now sounded older, and much more mature. I wondered if he would be able to recognize me or my voice now…

“You did but….” Reece wavered, the irresolution he held in this topic evident on his youthful face. “You never really told me much… Like how you met him, how he… he… you know.”

I blinked back the tears and sat on the grass. “Sit down beside me.”

Reece’s brow furrowed in puzzlement but he listened to me and seated himself beside me.

I looked ahead at the gravestone that sat, tucked in the vibrant green grass and the beautiful and colourful flowers that we had planted around it danced as a zephyr tugged at their stems.

A statue of a crying angel stood upon the gravestone. The angel had spread her wings and tendrils of her long, thick hair whipped the wind. She was draped in a striking silk gown that covered her feet and she held her face in her hands making it look as though she was crying.

“The story I am about to tell you is about a girl. A girl who fell in love with a boy like no other… a boy who had the heart of an angel but wore the façade of a devil; a boy who loved her with all his heart even when she didn’t love him; a boy who was probably the lord’s greatest creation.”

Reece nodded and the amount of anticipation my words had mustered in him was evident in his eyes.

I cleared my throat and stared at the letters on the tombstone as I began.
