Hands covered Riley’s eyes and a low voice murmured, “Guess who?”
“My personal slave?”
The voice chuckled. “Guess again.”
She sniffed the air. “Someone who needs to take a bath?” she answered cheekily.
The hands pulled away. “Hey! I’ll have you know, I just took a shower after I left the gym.” Shane took a seat across from her.
“Is this the part where I look impressed that you go to the gym?” Riley leaned forward. “Did you actually work-out or did you watch the yoga classes like Allen?”
Shane flexed his right arm. “What do you think?”
Riley paused. “Do you really want me to answer?” she sent him a teasing look.
“No, because I already know the answer,” he answered smugly.
“So, are you in the library to study or just to bother me?”
Shane placed a hand over his heart. “Bother? I’m hurt Riley. I thought we were more than that.”
Riley sent him a pointed look.
He chuckled. “I’m here to inquire your plans for tonight.” Shane started to fidget in his seat. “I was hoping you would want to grab drinks with some of my friends after your shift at the Cup.”
Riley was about to accept till she remembered the Knightsmen meeting.
“I can’t tonight. This whole week I won’t have much free time.” She added apologetically, “I’m sorry.”
Shane looked away. “I understand. It’s getting close to finals.”
Riley made a sound in agreement.
He rose from his chair, hands stuffed in his pocket. “Well, I better let you get back to studying. I’ll see you later Riley.”
Riley was about to call out to him but he had already disappeared in the shelves of books. Mentally, she berated herself for the way she handled the situation. She knew she could have been nicer, but she was drained from earlier.
She did not dwell on it for too long, because she was late for her shift at the Cup. Riley raced across campus and walked through the door just as she heard Ryan wonder where she was.
“Sorry! Sorry! I am here.” Out of breath, she leaned against the counter for support.
“Thank god. There was a huge surge of customers and they wiped us out.” He motioned to all the empty containers.
“I’m on it.” Riley saluted and started working.
Halfway through her shift, Harrison and Tucker strolled through the doorway. They ordered their drinks from Ryan and then sat at a table Riley was cleaning.
“You know, this table could be a lot cleaner, scholarship student.” Tucker wiped a napkin across the table and showed her the soiled results.
Harrison shook his head. “Tsk. Tsk. I expected a lot more out of you, scholarship girl.”
Riley sighed and kept wiping down the table.
“No answer?” Tucker pressed.
“Maybe she’s embarrassed to be seen talking with us in public. Might dirty her reputation.”
“Why Harrison, I believe we are the ‘other woman’. You can’t have your cake and eat it too, Riley,” Tucker playfully advised.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Were you speaking to me?” She made a show of looking around. “Because I don’t know anyone named Scholarship around here.”
Harrison cooed. “Aww, I think we hurt her feelings, Tucker.”
Riley was about to respond when Ryan walked over with their order. He placed the cups on the table.
“Here’s your non-fat latte and cappuccino. Do you need anything else?”
Riley quickly said, “No, they are good.”
Tucker smirked. “Are you trying to get rid of us, Riley?”
“And here I thought we were friends,” Harrison looked wounded.
Riley groaned in frustration.
“So dramatic, Riley. Aren’t you going to introduce us to your friend?”
Riley shot Tucker a glare and introduced the three of them. “Well, we have to get back to work. Bye!” Riley grabbed Ryan’s arm and dragged him back to the counter before Harrison and Tucker could say anything else.
“What was that about? Since when are you friends with those guys?” Ryan demanded.
Riley honestly didn’t know how to answer. Everything had happened so quickly, she never thought how she would explain it to her friends. She didn’t want to outright lie, but she could not tell them she was in a secret society.
