"I am terrified by this dark thing

That sleeps in me;

All day I feel its soft, feathery turnings, its malignity."

-Sylvia Plath

I smiled at him only to find him smiling back but it wasn't a real smile. It was a smirk twisted into some unexplained emotion. I blinked my eyes again to find that his handsome figure had vanished. I frantically looked around like I had lost him. My body was so hot it felt like it was on fire but my hands were dead cold. I could hear great waves of water crashing against something. My eyes searched for him frantically around the dungeon.

I spotted something red moving in a distance. I slowly walked towards it not knowing what to expect. My mouth opened in horror as I saw all the blood. It was everywhere on the floor and on the girl's dress.

She smiled weakly back at me and at that terrifying moment I knew it was me. I looked at her dress which was all red, so much like the color of blood but then I realized something which made me shiver.

It was all her blood. Her dress was made of the red oozing liquid which was clearly seeping from her body.

A scream broke through my dream.

I opened my eyes, exiting the ghastly dream which had been frequently occurring in my sleep. My heart was thumping loudly inside my chest and my hands were sweating.

My eyes were met by darkness. After switching on the light of my room, I made my way over to the bathroom. I needed to freshen my mind up. These dreams were really getting to me.

Glancing at myself in the mirror, I marveled at the terrible state of my appearance. Auburn locks were draped over my shoulders, lightly tanned skin and hazel eyes which appeared pale in what little light was there.

As I exited the bathroom I heard a loud crashing sound. Outside, the cold wind was blowing, making the leaves rustle and the branches of the trees collide with one another. It was in seven in the evening, and I had just barely woken up.

My house, in this gloomy weather, looked frightening as I strolled over to the kitchen. After fixing myself a large cup of hot coffee, I dragged myself over to the wet porch.

Enjoying the wet and cold feeling, I sat down on one of the garden chairs and took a sip of the steaming beverage. My head hurt, and it was hard to be able to concentrate on anything. The wind made my hair flutter backwards, cold air causing me to pull my cardigan tighter around me.

It was about two weeks ago that all this had started; these horrible dreams, all with the same premise.

Someone was pulling a blonde, innocent girl, around the same age as me, into a pit of fire.

Pulling at her blonde curls, a woman in purple clothes, muttering incoherently under her breath, and yet I could still understand her words. She was speaking some nonsense, referring to the fact that it was the girl's destiny to do this, which quite honestly resembled complete and utter rubbish to me.

What was her destiny, exactly?

As the young girl within her grasp screamed in pain at the aggravation, someone somewhere called out towards her, telling her to stop.

Who was she?

What was she supposed to do?

Who was trying to stop her?

Stop her from what?

What do these dreams mean, anyway?

These were the questions that continued to plague my mind. It was the same dream each and every time, and it was always, always horrifying. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't seem to get my mind to drift away from them. There was something about the dreams which really caught my attention.

The innocent girl possessed the same exact eye colour as me, and not just that, but even resembled my appearance to an extent.

Was it a coincidence? I could never tell.

In every dream, there was this black-haired guy standing some way off, just staring at her with pure abhorrence in his eyes, a sadistic cruelness in his smile.

Was it hatred...for her?

The wind had soon grown bitterly cold, resulting in a difficulty for me to sit out in the open. I looked around my neighborhood, attempting to get my attention off the dreams which haunted my lonely nights, preventing any proper rest.

My eyes fell on the balcony of the house next door to mine. It had always made me feel uneasy, that house.

It possessed a somewhat ethereal aura about it. Its walls were grey in colour with black shutters on its windows, a large black gate surrounding the perimeter of the structure. I had no idea who lived there as I hadn't seen a soul since one year ago when I had moved into the neighborhood.

But today was different. Today there was someone on the balcony. Someone with shining, raven black hair.

He smiled at me.

It was him.
