Chapter Two

Harper nodded and dashed up the stairs. Somehow she got the feeling that she was going to get into trouble with Mrs Neathway an awful lot.

The top floor turned out to be an attic. There were only five doors on either side of the hallway and a window at the end. Room number forty eight was the furthest from the staircase and nestled in between a door marked ‘bathroom’ and what looked to be a boiler room. Techno music pumped out from under the door in a language that Harper didn’t recognise or understand. Harper dumped her bags and knocked on the door twice, she then waited.

And waited. And waited. Finally Harper picked her bags up and opened the door. Harper was not expecting what she saw. The entire room was decorated in variations of baby pink. There were posters on the wall of Asian singers and actors. One of the two twin beds had a fluffy pink blanket and several teddy bears piled on top of it. The other had a duvet and two pillows neatly made on top of it, also pink. There was a white desk and wardrobe next to the door, they were both covered in stickers and posters. Another desk and wardrobe sat on the other side of the room. The source of the music was a pink stereo perched on top of some books.

And in the centre of it all, was a petite Asian girl jumping around and singing at the top of her voice to the song. She had her eyes closed so Harper watched with a smile on her face. The girl just oozed happiness and Harper could see herself living with this girl without too many problems.

Suddenly the music jammed and repeated the same note again and again. The girl stopped dancing and her arms dropped to her sides.

“Every bleeding time,” she muttered to herself before opening her eyes. That’s when she caught sight of Harper.

“Holy crap!” The girl yelled as she jumped three foot backwards. She clamped her hands to her chest as she caught her breath. Finally her breath slowed down enough to enable her to speak at a normal pace.

“Who are you?” She asked confusion in her eyes.

“I’m Harper Caddel, I’m a new student.” Harper gave a little wave, “I’m rooming with you.”

The girl said nothing for several seconds, she gave Harper the once over before squealing and pulling Harper into the room. Once Harper was out of the doorway she was given a giant bear hug. Harper patted the girl’s shoulder awkwardly, and tried to breathe normally for the girl was squeezing her tightly.

The girl gave Harper one last squeeze before letting her go; Harper straightened her T-Shirt and tried to replace the oxygen that had been squeezed out of her.

“I’ve wanted a roomie for so long, but I’ve never gotten one. They say that my music is always so loud and nobody wants to listen to it,” the girl pulled a sad face, “But now I have someone to talk to!” She clapped her hands together with glee. Harper gave her a slightly forced smile. She really hoped that this girl wouldn’t have this much energy in the morning.

“I’m Lois.” Lois held her hand out to Harper.

Harper shook it briefly, “Hi Lois.”

The girl beamed before turning to the bed with all the teddies on it. She frowned and put her finger to her mouth in a thoughtful way.

“I’m sorry about all the teddies,” she said as she began to find new homes for them, “I like to collect them. Plus they look absolutely gorgeous! Don’t you think.”

To be honest Harper thought that they looked a little creepy with their pitch black staring eyes. But she smiled and nodded nonetheless; which pleased Lois. Lois moved the majority of the bears onto her own bed, and the rest went on the floor in a two neat rows along the side of her bed. Harper nearly groaned when she noticed the princess duvet on the bed that now her’s, unfortunately she didn’t have any bed sheets with her so she would have to make do. Harper perched on the edge of her bed and opened her bags.

“Where shall I put my clothes?” Harper asked.
