Prologue
I've been protecting it for so long. Its secrets have been lost I time because I've mad sure that no one has a chance to see it... well at least who I don't trust. So, no one was come even close to deciphering the spell. After a while it passed into legend... then the legend became a myth... and it was lost. Though some still know of its existence... and there lies the problem. If anyone found it... all hell would break loose. I suppose it all started around 3000 years ago when I was young and given the task of looking after their little... experiment. Even they didn't know what they had done. I know, I know... this all sounds cryptic... I guess I've been protecting it for so long I don't want to give anything away. No one will believe you anyway... so I will tell you.
Chapter 1 - confusion
3000 years earlier
It was hot, very hot... as it is pretty much all year round.
Aswan is always the place to go when you're sixteen like me. Though people are normally married by my age!
I grew up on the move, but I stick out here because I have blonde hair and green eyes. I am not a priestess like others who are fair... but I'm happy at home. Anyway, it all started when I was down by the great Nile River collecting water...
"Emris!"
"Yes mother?" I answered robotically, it was always Emris do this, Emris to that wash this, wash that! Blah blah blah!
"There are some people here that whish to speak to you!" I couldn't understand her tone. It scared me.
Warily, I slowly walked inside and was rooted to the spot when I found myself face to face with...
"...Dad?" I asked in disbelief
He smiled. "Hello missy Rissy." He said in awe using the nickname he gave me.
My mind was racing. Why was he here? Was something wrong? Is he going to leave? What's going on? The same questions weir going round my head like a cartwheel... I couldn't think of the answers, but I knew this wasn't a social call.
"Why are you here?" my mother asked sharply before I could escape my inner monologue.
"I came here to see you both." He said smiling again.
"Rubbish!" my mother scoffed "you only come to see us when you want something... not just because you want to spend time with your daughter!"
My hart was breaking. I hadn't seen my dad in five years, and he has just come back, and he wasn't even here to see me!
He looked at my mum "It's time. He said simply.
"No!" she screeched and ran over to me. "No! No! No!"
"What?" I asked, not having a clue what they weir talking about. My mum went on as if I hadn't even spoken.
"You promised! You said you would keep her a secret!" she had tears running down her face. I looked at my dad. Pleading for someone to tell me what the hell was going on!
"Darling," he said softly to me "there is something we need to tell you."
"No! No! No!" my mother squealed, her pitch a few octaves higher than what it should be. "You cant! I wont let you take her!"
My father was staring at her wit a fierce light in his eyes.
"You wont be able to stop me." He said quietly, his anger just under the surface. "She needs to know." He said, his voice turning softer.
He stared at my mum.
Eyes pleading.
My mother ran from the room whimpering.
"What? What's going on?" I asked, nervous.
"It's about your family... my side"
"Oh... great." I sighed
