David’s POV
The door is so close, I see it open, I see her face. Pepper, my Pepper, I have been such a fool…
I feel my soul returning to this body, the knocking of the door still, no, that is the thumping of her hands hitting upon my chest. But everything is still so tenuous; it’s like an invisible divide keeping me from entering.
She looks so terrifyingly beautiful in this cosmic doorway. Her hair swinging as she thumps once, and again, and then…
The floor swallows us both and we are falling through the void, and all I can see are beautiful glorious fractals growing outside of us beyond our reach.
As our souls freefall, I reach out for her hand in mine but I can’t grasp it. She looks at me with terrible woeful eyes and her teeth chatter, “Atticus…” and her body sinks away from me five fathoms deep. I try to dive to her in the void but there is no direction: no up, no down, just an all-encompassing nothingness, and soon I begin to forget what it is my hands are wildly searching for.
And then a hand reaches for mine and I feel my soul being yanked…
