Chapter 15: The Hilltop II.

As Kyle and I were working, oblivious to the incident taking place in town, I dug a bit deeper into his feelings for Fay. I was curious about how serious he really was about this girl.

“So, where do you think this thing with Fay is going?” I asked as we kept watch over little kids tobogganing down the hill.

He let out a laugh “I dunno, man. I only just started going out with the girl.”

“Yeah, but even before you kissed her you were talking about how you felt like you were supposed to go after her. And you did. So, now what?” I inquired.

“I dunno. I’m not really thinking too much about it. I’m really just kind of going with it. Enjoying the ride, you know? You think too much.”

“Or you don’t think enough” I countered. “But, I see what you’re saying. I’m enjoying things with Katie, I’m not really making plans. Just enjoying it.”

“Yeah, man. I know that things are going to turn out alright anyways. I just really like this girl and I’m going to spend as much time with her as I can. And I’m going to treat her right. Treat her like how she deserves to be treated. I’m going to be better to her than any other guy could ever hope!” He was getting passionate. “Like, I just want to give her everything!” he said, throwing his hands up in the air.

“Whoa, buddy. Settle down. Take it easy. Don’t rush too much. You’ve only been with her for a month” I cautioned.

He laughed and then said with a smile “I know. It’s just that being with her makes me feel so fulfilled. It’s like it’s what I was made for; to care for her.”

“Ok, but what if she hurts you?” I asked slowly.

“She won’t.”

“But what if she does?”

He was silent for a moment. He looked around with his hands in his pocket. The sound of kids laughing and sleds sliding was the soundtrack for whatever deep thoughts he was thinking. By the concentrated look on his face, I could tell that he was seriously considering what I had asked.

I let him have his thoughts.

“I don’t know” he said quietly.

Another child went by on his sled. The buzz from the halogen lights took over the silence as he continued to think.

“It depends, I guess.”

“On what?” I asked.

“What it was that she did.”

I didn’t know what to say next. So we just stood there, listening to kids playing. A snowball fight had broken out at the bottom of the sledding hill.

“I don’t know!” He said in frustration. I was surprised that he was still thinking about it. My thoughts had already moved on to being in the snowball fight and throwing balls of ice at little kids.

“Relax, man” I said.

“It’s just that I feel so strongly that I need to care for her. More than anyone else has. More than anyone else wants! I just feel it in my heart that I’m supposed to take care of her. I know it sounds crazy, but I really feel like I need to be with her.”

“Regardless of what happens?” I asked cautiously.

“Yeah. Regardless of what happens.”

I knew there was no way he could stick to that and, to be honest, I don’t think he really knew what he was saying.
