This is probably the worst and shortest chapter in the history of chapters. Please forgive me. WARINING: SHORT CHAPTER :((
"So what do you have in mind for university, Sofia?" Caroline asked politely.
We were having a quite too formal supper, all of the boys all acted like robots when Caroline came in. Brushing crumbs of pretzels off their trousers, straightening their polos, and clearing their throats. They all welcomed her with greetings, warm smiles, and kisses & hugs. But everything just seemed way too stiff. Too... proper.
I frowned at her question, "University?"
Zayn cleared his throat beside me and mutters under his breath, "College."
Right, I knew that.
"Oh, uhm..." I swallowed, "I haven't really got anything in mind. Yet."
Caroline raised an eyebrow, "At sixteen? You should probably decide soon, dear. It won't be long now."
From the corner of my eye I saw Harry shift and clench his jaw. He's been acting all moody since Caroline arrived. Hardened and narrowed eyes, set jaw, clenched fists, and stiff posture. If he wasn't happy to see his ex girlfriend, he should at least try to pretend to be the littlest bit happy, or at least welcoming. But no. That wasn't the case at all.
I cleared my throat before replying, "I'll keep that in mind."
She smiled kindly at me, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. As she lifted her glass of water to her lips, a gold charm bracelet chimed from her wrist, catching my attention. It had only one charm -the Eiffel Tower.
"Beautiful isn't it?"
I snapped my head up to find her catching me looking at her jewelry. I smiled and nodded, "Yes it is. From Paris I presume?"
Since when did I talk so formally? Louis was probably laughing at me inside his head right now.
She gave a curt nod, admiring the bracelet as if remembering the day she got it, "Yes. Harry here, gave it to me when we paid visit there."
My kidneys bumped into my stomach. And if anyone saw me pausing for a millisecond, half way through slicing my roast beef, then they were probably ninjas in their past lives.
Harry gave it.
Of course he did, who else would?
They were together. It makes perfect sense. 'And you shouldn't be affected, you chose your sibling path.' the voice said.
Harry said nothing, his face impassive.
"He did? How... creative of you Harold," Niall says, chuckling nervously before casting a concerned glance towards me, which I thoroughly ignored.
"Really? It must be wonderful to reach Paris," I simply commented.
She looks at me, confused, "You haven't been to Paris?"
I smile, "No. But I have it in my bucket list."
Caroline looks a Harry, "You haven't taken her to Paris? You take all your girls to Paris-"
"Oh no!" I interrupted loudly before Harry could speak, causing everyone to jump slightly on their seats.
"I'm not-" I began.
"We're not together," Harry finished for me. The way he said it, was like sand paper rubbing against each other. Raspy, rough, and bitter. We held each others gazes for what seemed like a long time, but it was probably just seconds.
"I see," was all that Caroline stated.
Everyone was silent after that. All you could hear was the clatter of utensils, the crunchy sound of crispy fry when being sliced and chewed, and the clearing of itchy throats when it was all too awkward. The air was thick with tension that was so fragile, but deadly when shattered. If it wasn't for Liam's mobile ringing, I would have thrown a fit for all this unwanted, and uncomfortable silence.
