"Carter, you're being ridiculous," Verity said, tossing her long brown hair over her shoulder. Chastity was a snob; Carter was truly a saint for putting up with her.

"Verity, she's my girlfriend." Carter snapped back, sighing as they continued through J. Crew. It was their first day back, and Ver had already managed to drag him shopping. Of course, as soon as he'd received a call from Chastity, the conversation had flipped to their relationship.

"Break up with her, then,"she reasoned, flipping through a rack of sundresses as she looked for her size. "The girl's such a pain, honestly."

"Just because you two don't get along doesn't mean -"

"She's a slut, you two break up and make -"

"Verity, you can't -"

"Do you even like her? I mean, sure she -"

"Verity." Carter stopped her, not wanting to fight today. "She's my girlfriend, I'll do what I want."

The brunette rolled her eyes, picking up a dress. Carter was ridiculous. "Whatever, I'm gonna go try this on."

Carter walked over to the chairs by the dressing rooms, sitting down and taking a deep breath. Of course, the year was starting with arguments and tension. Verity and Chastity hated each other, and it was extremely frustrating for Carter to be constantly choosing between his best friend and girlfriend. Truthfully, he didn't even know why they didn't get along. Before he could think any further, Verity stepped out into the waiting area.

"What do you think?" She asked, twirling around and looking at herself in the mirror. It was pleated a-line dress in a kelly green, a favorite color of hers.

Carter groaned. "We're in Maine, why does anything matter?"

Verity gave him a look. "Carter, get over it. What do you think?"

Carter shrugged. Ver owned so many dresses, he didn't see how this one was different from any one she already had. "What do you need this for?" He questioned, arching an eyebrow as he leaned back.

Verity groaned. "The parent dinner?"

She was referring to the school's annual parent-student dinner, held on the eve of the first day. All of the staff were there, and nearly every student and their parents attended. Personally, Verity thought it was just a way for the families to brag about how much money they'd spent that summer, but Charlotte said it was an important part of keeping funding for the school. Whatever it was, it was 'casual', which meant that your outfit shouldn't cost less than $150.

"That's tonight?" Carter never kept track of these things. That's why being best friends with the headmistress's daughter was useful.

Verity rolled her eyes. "It's always the night before school starts. How do you not know? Aren't you coming?" She should've realized Carter had forgotten.

"Not going." Carter replied. He'd rather not attend an event where his parents would be likely to show up.

"Whatever." Verity continued to look at her reflection. She really did like the dress on her. It was long enough, which rarely happened considering she was 5' 9". She'd texted her mom a minute ago; since she was already in town, she'd hopefully get here soon. "My mom should be here any minute for her approval." Verity stated, since Carter wasn't being any help.

"You do look nice, as always." Carter complimented. He could tell she was irked by his indifferent attitude. However, his compliment was genuine. She had long legs and pretty green eyes. If she wasn't practically his sister, he'd bang her.

Verity smiled, plopping onto the couch next to him. "You should come tonight."

"I don't want to see my parents." Carter said with a tone of finality, going back to his phone.
