BY

Ronnie Lee Jeffires

When he wakes up he hears the screams, the insults and the sound of the winter wind. The man feels the cold biting at his skin, the aching of his bones, and the discomfort of the hard concrete. When the man wakes up he sees the dark heavy storm clouds, the meager camps made by the forgotten of society, and the privileged members of society passing by him as though he was invisible. When the he wakes up he tastes the dryness in his throat like a large cotton ball. He goes to sleep and wishes to find a way to escape but nightmares haunt his sleep. The man’s stomach twists into tight knots lacking of nourishment, there is no comfortable position in which to sleep.

He finds a home, love, family, and acceptance. The sights, sounds, and familiar feelings of the street however have been permanently seared into his mind, his heart, and his soul. He wanted to escape the streets but even in his home with his family he is still trapped on the streets of his mind. He is a soldier in an eternal war he can never escape.
