George Allgood is a rogue who rides a unicorn - a unicorn named Cerberon. After getting kicked out of the home of a wealthy widow George was attempting to 'console,' they find themselves at loose ends... but not for long. Soon George gets entangled with another widow and her two young children who are trying to leave England to start a new life in America, and he promises to see her family safely there. Through a combination of coincidence, bad luck, and poverty, the five of them are forced to make the journey via the magical realm that should be Cerberon's home, and then things start to get really interesting.
The writing in this book is solid, although a somewhat brusque writing style distracts at times from what could be a completely riveting story. I would love to see a little more "shown" in the parts we rush past in a flurry of "telling."
Cerberon and George make a pretty pair of lead characters: on the one hand Cerberon is a disconnected three-quarter unicorn trying to live up to his heritage, and on the other George is a charming ne'er-do-well who doesn't mean any harm but usually avoids anything serious. The rest of the cast is populated by nicely three dimensional beings (I use the term 'beings' to encompass the magical creatures and legendary peoples that populate Arumara). Best of all is the enigmatic Aladavan. Is he friend or foe? There's not really any way to tell just yet.
There are a couple of delicious twists in the plot that I thoroughly enjoyed, one almost right off the bat. After an excellent beginning things get slow for a chapter or two, but hang in there! It gets good, and I mean good. Things aren't always what they seem to be, and at this point in the story there are more than a few questions waiting mysteriously for an answer.
I have it from the author that the entire text of the novel is complete, just being uploaded a piece at a time. So go read Cerberon! You just might like it.
