Chapter 1-
1 Hour After
CHARLIE
I wake to gunshots. My eyes flutter open, everything is blurry. My lungs burn, I feel as if I’ve been deprived of oxygen. My limbs ache as if I failed at a game of Chicken with a train. Once I regain my natural senses, I note that I lay sideways, facing something that’s tall, pink… and utterly revolting!
“Get the boy out of here! Take him to Chitose before the beast sees him!” A voice reaches my ear as a whisper. Next thing I know is that I’m thrown over a strong man’s shoulder and with every step he takes, his shoulder digs into my stomach and I’m holding back the chunks that want to escape through my lips.
Once the man carrying me takes a sharp turn, I see something absolutely horrible, a large green creature that takes the shape of an enormous spider. I can’t hold it back now, I vomit, hot fluids propel out in nasty clumps all over the fast moving floor, and once I empty myself, I scream. The spider beast snaps its focus on me and my scream escalates in volume.
My scream is cut short by a strong pain in my lower stomach; I hear the man grunt beneath me. Now, I’m definitely positive that I emptied myself now. “Disgusting.” The man groans, but now begins to pick up the pace. I fix my gaze on the man’s back instead of the giant spider probably chasing us.
The man makes several tight turns that will most likely leave bruises on my abdomen. We reach a hallway that is pitch black, but the man is still able to navigate his way into the right direction. He closes the door lightly behind him and places me on the floor. I hear his hands scratching the wooden floor for something, and then I hear a metal door open.
“You go down first.” The voice is deep yet feminine.
“Okay, I will.” I agree and roll myself towards his voice, but sadly I should’ve asked for his assistance because I ended up falling down the hole I was supposed to use a ladder to get down. How do I know I needed a ladder? Because I felt the endless steps slam against my body. I hit the floor within a few seconds, and it’s amazing I’m still breathing, because even my skin is screaming in pain.
I feel weight on my chest, the size of a banana, the man’s foot. I manage a moan to signal that he’s stepping on me. “Oh, you’re still alive? That’s very surprising.” The weight on my chest ceases and I’m able to breathe again.
“I advise you to get up. There are still monsters in this area.” The man shines a flash light down the corridor, and I see a disgusting bat creature hanging from the ceiling. “Damn, stay quie-” He’s cut short by my screaming. This thing is gigantic, about three times my size and its purple! A gigantic purple bat with large, red, disgusting eyes and a hideously large, drooling mouth!
My thoughts quickly avert to the pain coursing through my body. The man has thrown me over his shoulder again while I wasn’t paying attention. Luckily the only thing I’m facing now is his back, but I hear gunshots and nasty squawking. My guess is that he took out the big guns and open fired on the thing. My guess is right, because the back of my head hits the ladder hard, that gun has a nasty recoil.
“Hang tight.” I feel one arm strap around my legs and he takes off full speed down a different corridor. I wrap my arms around his waist tightly and shut my eyes in fear. My head begins to bash repeatedly against the armor he’s wearing. Urgh the pain! It hurts!
SQUAWK!
My eyes explode open. That horrible sound came from behind... it can’t be that far from us. I lift my head up and wait for my eyes to adjust to the darkness. Once my eyes adjust, I see the bat is within touching distance. The wings flap at violently fast rate toward us. Its mouth opens wide; I can see the string of saliva connecting most of its teeth and the tongue… it opened in half with a set of teeth of its own.
The beast’s breath is enough to knock me out, but I manage to stay conscious, but the bat slams it’s head against the ceiling. This would be funny in other circumstances; I sigh in relief. The path takes a downward slope and the walls are narrower. The bat wouldn’t be able to fly through here. Safe at last.
SQUAWK! SQUAWK!
The man trips and I fly off his shoulder and land on my side. He swears and strangles what looks like a snake. He gets to his feet and helps me up. “Get to the elevator; keep going down this pathway, make a left and it’s there.” He pulls out his gun and faces the opposite direction.
