Job Of A Lifetime

"Son of a bitch!" I shouted to myself as I walked towards my house. I garnered the attention of few passers-by who were obviously taken aback by my rudeness. I blew a raspberry at one of the onlookers and went forth. I swear if I had a pressure gauge, it would have blew up into bits by now.

Patronizing bastard!  Never, prior to this, had I been insulted in such a direct way. I mean, there were ways about saying something about someone's figure without being so 'upfront' about it! Being a billionaire didn't give him the right to talk shit. I walked into Starbucks and hastily ordered a latte with skimmed milk and double shots of expresso. The plonked the dollar bill on the counter, snatched my drink and was about to walk to a seat when I felt someone grab me by the arm and pull me around.

"WATCH IT!" I bellowed but immediately began to apologize when I realized it was Sherry. Sherry's office was located in front of this branch, hence she always came here for a cuppa.

She frowned, "I take it, it didn't go well."

"Well?" I scoffed, "Talk about a disaster on the Hiroshima scale! That was how well it went." I took a sip of my latte and calmed down as the cool coffee slid down my throat. Sherry gave me a weak smile, "Well at least now you can go work at KFC." She patted my thigh.

I pulled away from her, "Dude, this is serious. He was down right rude and for chrissakes' be a bit nice to a lady, eh? I just dropped hot coffee on you, not the galaxy!"

Sherry's eyes widened, her brown eyes looking deep into mine, "You dropped hot coffee all over him? How? What? Why?"

"Is this the Spanish Inquisition? Ugh, well, I didn't watch where I was going and bumped into him causing him to spill his coffee down his white shirt and black trousers, or were they white trousers?" I teased with a smile.

Sherry slapped my arm, "You serious? OH MY GOD!" She squealed, "What did he look like underneath? I bet you must have had a good peep!"

"Good peep? More like a show?" I scowled.

She scooted forth in her chair, "DylDyl, what does that mean?"

And so I began to narrate everything that happened, from the moment we collided to when I entered and exited his office.

"Holy fuck! What a prick!" Sherry frowned, she gulped down the last of her coffee and cleaned her lips with a tissue, "That sucks, baby!"

"I know, I flushed down the job of a lifetime."

My phone began to buzz loudly, I picked it up. I showed the number to Sherry, "Do you know whose number this is?"

She shook her head.

I decided to answer the call, "Hello?"

"Listen here, Dylan Hunter. You do not, come to my office, talk rubbish and then walk out of it. You hear me?"

I mouthed to Sherry, It's Nick Bateman!

Sherry mouthed back, girl you are sooo screwed. I exhaled and replied, "Excuse me, sir but you were the one who used a tiny mistake on my part to take a job away from me. That's like, a violation of the Right to Work."

"Baby, if it were up to me, you wouldn't work at any company. At all."  Nicholas laughed cruelly on the other side of the phone. I shuddered, "What the fuck is your problem? Stop getting your panties in a twist, Nicholas. It was my mistake and I apologized. Why the fuck are you harassing me?"

I heard him exhale on the other line, "I think, I was getting out of line."

"No. You are out of line." I said and cut the phone. Sherry laughed, "What the hell?" I got up, dusted the invisible dirt flakes on my skirt and threw a used tissue in the bin. I grabbed my unfinished latte, "I better go. And you better go too. It's been a long day. Filled with assholes and panty twisters. Whatever, I don't...I can't..." I broke off, tears glistening in my eyes. Sherry handed me a tissue.

"I just don't understand how some one can be that rude. He said I was 'fat' and 'not worth interviewing!'"

Sherry weakly laughed, "Screw him, he doesn't know what he is missing out on. You are the most dedicated and driven employee anyone could ever have. And if he wants to hold such a...trivial matter against you, it just shows his standard of thinking. Let it go. Besides, half the girls would probably be getting interviewed by him, just to get laid so I guess you are better off."

"I don't think he needs me, I am better than those girls. I wanted to work. I still do. But it's okay. It's his loss, not mine." I said wiping my tears away.

"Now there's a good lass!" Sherry thumped my back and we left the cafe. She went to her office and I went back to our apartment.

I walked towards our building when someone bumped into me, "Ouch!" I softly said and looked up. It was Nick. Nick Bateman!

"What are you doing here? Stalking me?" I sneered at him, rubbing my arm. His brown eyes twinkled with amusement, "No, I asked my surveillance team to track your location via your phone. I wanted to apologize to you."

"You tracked my location?" I asked him through gritted teeth, "Che diavolo!" I sweared in Italian.

"Cosa? Cosa problema?" He replied back in Italian. I was surprised he knew how to speak my language. Not many people in New York spoke it. Except for the American born Italians. But their way of speaking would put any original Italian speaker to shame.

"Tu! Tu sei problema! Che cazzo? Go away!" I yelled at him and walked to my apartment.

I felt his arms wrap around my waist as he pulled me to him, my back against his front, "Please, I am sorry Dylan. I didn't mean that." He whispered softly.

I pushed him away, "No! You should have thought of such shit before you insulted me and kicked me out of your office. You are a bastardo!" I pulled my hair out of my face, tucking the strands behind my ear.

"I said I am sorry."

"Well that shit won't work now. Hurt me and talk shit about my weight, about my face, about my appearance and then say sorry. How sweet!" I scoffed. I walked into the lobby of my building.

"I'm here to offer you the position of my PA, won't you take it?" He said. I turned around and looked for any humour in his eyes or body language. His arms were to his sides, one ruffled his hair and I understood that he didn't do this very often.

"Take your job, I'll keep my dignity." I said and walked away, leaving him alone in the lobby.
