Chapter Fourteen: The Truth Bites
It was four days after Jeffrey had forced me into silence. He threatened to tell Deo where Cyril’s mansion was which meant that we would all be dead in a matter of minutes if Jeffrey went through with his promise. I couldn’t let that happened so I stayed quiet.
Outside of my window, the leaves had changed colors. It was fall now. I had been at the mansion so long that the seasons were changing.
Great.
My eyes followed a leaf outside blowing in the wind. It was also cold outside. Not a little chilly like it sometimes was in Chicago but bitter cold that sent shivers up and down your spine if you dared step outside without a coat. Sometimes the weather was just that cruel.
It was four days later and I still hadn’t thought of a plan to get rid of Jeffrey. I sat in my room thinking. I was not a schemer. It wasn’t in my personality to come up with plans and ways to get rid of people. That was more of Reese’s job but I knew that I couldn’t tell her anything. Jeffrey would know if I told someone about him being a traitor and that was not a risk I wanted to take. I couldn’t risk the lives of the people I loved.
I thought back to the one time I had actually gotten someone in trouble. When Melissa was younger, she was slightly more annoying. She had gotten herself into trouble by breaking something that was very important to my parents. After telling my parents, I felt awful because she ended up getting into a lot of trouble. I had a feeling that I wouldn’t feel bad about getting Jeffrey in trouble though.
“I need to get Jeffrey out of this mansion.” I said to myself as I sighed.
I rolled over on my bed and looked at the intricate pattern on the quilt. School was surely starting up again. It was fall and I should have returned to school like my friends. Surely they had wondered where I was and what I was doing. My best friend Venus would have definitely missed me. We had spent so much time together that I knew she would miss me. It had been almost a month since I had met Cyril. I thought back to the time had locked me in a dungeon. Now I was in love with him.
The weather was still cold outside. The last time I had checked, it was raining. I stood up to close the window as more rain poured down and a bolt of lightning split the sky. Someone had begun knocking on the door as soon as I turned from the window. I jumped a little and went over to the door.
“Beatrice-” I breathed a sigh of relief as I noticed that it was only her at the door.
“Can I come in, An?” She asked.
I nodded.
She engulfed me in a bear hug and began saying something about how happy she was to see me. Beatrice was the nice human Bride of Vincent, one of Cyril’s vampires. She was one of the only people in the mansion I felt I could trust other than Reese.
The blonde released me, walked into my room and stood near one of the chairs inside. I closed the door shut and a smile spread across her face.
