I stormed outside with Mase close behind me. Slamming his car door with more force than necessary, I jumped in and stared at him blankly as he calmly got in the other side.

‘Ash, I’m-‘

‘Just drive!’ I snapped harshly, my voice cold and emotionless. I spotted Liam making his way towards us and panicked.

I didn’t want to be anywhere near him.

As if both brothers sensed my thoughts, Liam sped up at the same time Mase accelerated in his direction. Liam barely had time to move before Mase shot out of the car park, narrowly missing him. Mase huffed, and I’m pretty sure it was because he hadn’t hit Liam. Not that I was complaining right now.

I felt the tears begging to release themselves, but I held them in. I closed my eyes, trying to make the pain go away, but all I could see was images of them. That wasn’t the look you give a sister, a friend, a family member…that’s how you look at someone you love. It was how Liam looked at me.

And who was I to him? A mate he picked up a few weeks ago - nothing special. I didn’t look like that girl-she was easily a model and I was an average human.

Liam had said humans and werewolf being mates was rare. I guess it also meant our bond wasn’t strong enough.

But it had felt strong to me.

Obviously not to him. Was this the reason he hadn’t been willing to mate with me? Why he hadn’t marked me when he had said most wolves do as soon as they meet?

‘I could kill him for what he did to you.’ Mase cut my thoughts short.

‘What?’ My voice sounded small and weak. Like the human I was. When had I ever begun to hate myself so much? Oh right, when my mate broke my heart.

‘Don’t you dare tell yourself you’re not good enough Ash,’ he all but growled. ‘My brother has always been an arrogant prick who thought ladies were his play toys and the world kissed his fucking ass. He never deserved you; he was never good enough for you.’

‘I can see that now,’ I muttered.

He looked like he was about to add more, but I squeezed my eyes shut and rested my cheek against the cool window. He got the message and focused on the road ahead.

I didn’t ask about where we were going or what was going to happen. It probably wasn’t the safest idea to put all my trust into the same guy who this morning had been threatening to kidnap me, but I just didn’t care anymore.

‘Ash, wake up,’ I felt someone shaking me gently. I stayed where I was, refusing to open my eyes to the world. Earth was a bitch to me.

‘Fine, have it your way,’ he sighed.

I thought he would leave it at that, but he’s Mase. I should have known better.

Before I knew it I was being hauled out of the car and into the blinding sunlight. I squinted against the sun, but soon enough I was treated to the lovely view of Mase’s backside as he picked me up and threw me over his shoulder.

It wasn’t that bad a view.

Woah, where the hell did that come from?

‘Mase put me down now!’ I yelled, pounding on his back. This ended up hurting me more than him. I noticed butterflies appearing in my stomach, which I pushed at the back of mind before I could dwell on it too much.

‘You asked for it Ash,’ he chuckled.

‘I’m not in the mood right now!’

‘I don’t really care; you’re not one of those pathetic girls whose world comes crashing down because of some idiot who didn’t deserve your trust. And you’re not going to start now.’

‘He wasn’t just some boyfriend Mase, he was my mate.

‘He is a dick.’

‘Mase, not now please.’ I felt a sharp pain in my chest. Then I took in our surroundings.

‘Where are we?’ I eyed the cheap, run-down motel before noticing the Rolex watch Mase was sporting. Not that I cared about where he was staying, but why downgrade? Knowing Mase, the watch and sports car were probably stolen.
