It had been one week since I had brought Jason home from the hospital; I had hired a nurse to help care for Jason, but Mark didn't allow him to do much. In fact he refused to leave Jason alone with Sam, I knew what he was afraid of; even I worried how far Abigail's reach extended. Still Sam hadn't done anything to make me suspect he was out to hurt Jason, or aid Abigail in anyway. Cassie was just as bad as Mark, they had made a pact to protect Jason and never let him come to harm again.
"Evelyn, there's a dark haired man at your front door; he said that he needs to speak with you about something important." I knew who it was before I even opened the door and stepped out onto the porch, Drake stood several feet away near the stairs.
"What do you want Drake?" I knew my tone was cold, that as he looked at me he could tell I was ready to fight if need be.
"Just to have a chat with you about Jason, has he woken up yet?" I stared at him fighting my own instincts, even though he didn't look like a threat I could feel that he was.
"He's improving, that's all you really need to know." His smile sent chills up my spine as he nodded and took one step toward me; I stood my ground and glared at him.
"So he's still sleeping, but don't worry too much he's going to wake up soon and when he does I need you to remind him of the orders he was given." The sentence stunned me momentarily, and then anger began to course through my system; he had the nerve to think his words mattered in the least.
"I will do no such thing, he isn't yours anymore he's mine and I won't let you or that old bitch near him again for as long as he lives." I blinked and in that moment Drake had managed to close the distance between us, he was only inches from my face.
"This isn't something he has a choice about Evelyn, you will remind him of the orders he was given please don't make this difficult on yourself." My mouth was dry and I didn't understand why, I could see the threat in his eyes as he smiled and took a step backward.
"Have a nice day Evelyn; remember what I said about Jason, it's very important that he follows those orders." I felt dizzy and I only looked away for a moment I swear, when I looked up Drake was gone like he had never been there. My eyes scanned the area searching for anyone, anything and there wasn't a single person or animal in sight. A moment later Sam opened the door behind me, I closed my eyes tightly and tried to wipe the fear from them.
"Ma'am is everything all right?" I looked at him and smiled brightly as I walked past him, I didn't stop moving until I was in my kitchen; quickly I took out all the knives and began sharping them.
"Mom, what are you doing?" I glanced over to Mark who held a trey in his hands, there was a small smile on his lips even though his eyes were clouded with confusion.
"Nothing important sweetheart, just stuff you don't normally see me doing because you're at school all day." He nodded and turned back to the secondary sink, the next time Drake came to my home I was taking one of these with me to greet him.
"How's Jason doing today baby?" Mark turned around his eyes so bright it warmed my heart; he was smiling from ear to ear.
"He's doing great, Jason can hold his head up now, his eyes open sometimes and that's a huge change, sometimes he moves his fingers." Mark's whole persona had changed the moment he had met Jason, I had noticed it the first day he came home from school. All he could talk about was this amazing friend he had made, though I hadn't figured out how amazing Jason was until I met him. Seeing Jason for the first time had been a small shock to my system I had never seen someone so perfectly formed in my entire life. Though what lay inside of him even I could see, it was like a bright light emanated from his very soul and shined outward making his skin the way it was.
"That's wonderful, are you going out to run tonight? It's supposed to rain later around eight or nine might even start early." I knew the answer before he said it, but it was just a testament to how much Mark loved Jason, which scared me to no end.
"Nah, I'm going to wait until Jason can run with me, he might wake up and I don't want to miss that for anything." There was a smile plastered on my lips as he walked out of the kitchen, all I could do was pray that Jason felt the same toward Mark. Sam joined me an hour later looking very frustrated as he took a seat across from me on the other side of the table.
