Chapter 9

Derek

I caught her just as I saw her eyes close and her body sway slightly. Trying not to concentrate on my feelings of pure joy of us finally completing the first stage of the Mating Ritual, I gripped her tightly to my form and looked at the scene before me.

Damn’, seemed to be the only word that I could think of to describe the scene before me. The ground had holes in them, as if moles had popped up all over the place before sinking back down underground. Trees had been blown into smithereens, branches and bits of leaves scattered everywhere.

Though strangely, and fortunately, no-one was hurt. So I guess that ruled out the suspicion of us being under attack. What was even stranger was the fact that it had all started when Mitchie’s face showed pain, and it had ended when she lost consciousness. Coincidence – I think not. Though I wonder if she knows what she is doing, or whether or not it is coming from her.

I stared down at her, my mischievous angel. My heart swelled as my wolf howled victoriously.

‘Mine!’ I thought as my eyes raked over her beautiful face, committing the peacefulness of her expression to memory. Not even the dirt and blood smeared on her cheeks or forehead dampened her beauty.

Of course, her douche bag of a brother had to ruin the moment. God I hope I'm not as protective towards my cousin Tiffany, as he is with Mitchie.

“Thanks for catching her and all, but if you don’t mind I’d like to take my baby sister back home. She needs to rest.” He said, his bare arms stretched out slightly as if saying for me to hand her over.

My wolf growled at the thought of us being separated again, I almost did too. But our alliance was new, therefore easily broken. So it wouldn’t be good if I tore him into pieces. Especially since I noticed Mitchie loved him more than the rest of her family.

Honestly, the things you do for the people you care about.

“You’re right – my mate does need to rest.” I said griping Mitchie even tighter to me as I said ‘mate’. “So I will take her back now.”

Anger showed on his usually collected expression, and I knew instantly that he wanted me to see it. But I in turn chose to take the high road and turned to look for my parents and Michael before he could protest. As I looked around, rain started falling. At first lightly, then it became so heavy that it almost hurt.

I unzipped my jacket while holding Mitchie to me using one arm, then took it off carefully and wrapped it around her, covering as much of her as possible. Then I placed her in my arms bridal style, making sure her head was in the place between my shoulder and neck, and finally located my parents and Michael with my eyes.

Michael and Dad were giving commands and reassuring everyone that it was safe and that they should all just go home while we, the leaders, found out what was wrong. Mum was with Lucy who, after helping Dad and Michael in getting some people home, were helping carry the injured friends of Mitchie out of the forest with whom I presume was their parents and the dude I think is named Matt.

When my Dad was alone I rushed to him and said quickly over the rain, “I’m gonna take Mitchie back to her house, is that okay?”

He sighed and stroked her hair in a fatherly way, before looking around.
