Chapter Twenty - Three
James’ POV
Whoa! I thought my Dad was a bit harsh on Sophia, threatening her on restricting her dancing but it never crossed my mind on how Mr. Connelly would feel about. He was furious. Apparently he didn’t know as well and when he found out that Mrs. C and Nick both knew and he didn’t, that did not sit very well with him at all.
I had promised Mr. and Mrs C that I would tell them everything my Dad said at the appointment and I just naturally assumed that both of them knew of her falling the week before. I felt horrible afterwards, I felt like I ratted out Mrs. C and Nick because both of them looked extremely guilty.
No one could calm Mr. C down. He was livid. I understand where he is coming from, she is his daughter, he was scared and when he found out the x-rays results, he had this horrible sad look in his eyes. I knew exactly how he felt because my heart dropped when I heard the results as well. He got teary eyed when I told him, but he quickly masked it and turned it into anger.
He got angry at Nick and his wife for not telling him, but it was Sophia who got the brunt of it. He knew she pushed her limits. Hell....we all knew that she did. She pushed and pushed until she was collapsing from fatigued. I knew that she crossed the sensors, I’ve seen her do it many times and every time she does, my heart drops until I see that she’s safe.
“I will not have my seventeen year old daughter in a grave just so that you can dance Sophia!” he shouted at her. “Is your health not important Sophia? Is it?” he kept pushing her but she was crying and crying. I was trying to comfort her, I held her hand under the table. I felt so out of place, but I wouldn’t leave her. All the months that Sophia and I have been dating, I never once heard Mr. C call her Sophia, he’s always called her Angel. So for him to be using her given name meant that he was extremely upset.
“Answer me!” he yelled once again. I winced because I could hear the terror in his voice. He was frightened of the news, even Mrs. C was emotionally upset over it. So were the brothers and Isobel.
“It is,” she sobbed out gripping my hand tightly for support.
“I don’t think so young lady,” he contradicted her answer. “You are day in and day out of that studio. From now on, you are forbidden to go in there. I will speak with Dr. Anderson myself on the results and see what we can do about them.”
“But Daddy!” she shouted back at him. Now my heart was breaking for her because he’s told her she cannot dance anymore.
“Don’t cross me Sophia!” he told her. He stood up now, he was shaking from anger. He looked over at me now and I felt like I wanted to crawl in a hole and hide. “James, my apologies. Please excuse me,” he told us all then left the room. Mrs. C quickly got up after him and went to follow her husband. Sophia tore out of her chair and she banged into the wall trying to find the back door. She managed to find it and ran outside.
I ran quickly after her. Isobel started freaking out because the cover was off of the pool, so I took off at lightning speed. I found her not far from the pool, she was crying so much, trying to navigate through the deck chairs.
“Shhhh....baby. Don’t cry,” I whispered in her hair as I wrapped my arms around her. She put her arms around my neck and sobbed into my chest. I noticed towards the end of their property there was a small garden with a bench in the middle of it. I scooped her up and brought her down there with me. I knew she wanted privacy and it was far enough from the house that she could cry all she wanted.
“Baby...you are breaking my heart,” I told her cuddling her closer and kissing her forehead. She was cradled into my chest, I could feel my t-shirt already soaked from her tears and from the sounds of her, she wasn’t going to let up any time soon. I didn’t know what to say to her, there wasn’t anything that I could do, so I just sat there and held her.
