CHAPTER NINE
It had already been three hours and we were still walking.
Judging by how hot it was at the moment, I would say it was probably around three or four in the afternoon.
So far, we had only encountered a satyr and a fairy, both of which let us walk by them without so much as looking our way.
Dakota had almost passed out when the fairy flew by his side for a few seconds before going back to its companion.
I caught a glimpse of her face and smiled.
She had colorful scales-which resembled rhinestones-on her face, around her eyes, and they made them look even greener than they actually were. She was beautiful. All fairies were.
"That was a fairy? That's so cool!"
I sent him a smile.
He was acting like an excited four year old, actually jumping up and down a few times.
"Yeah, that's a fairy. Pretty cool to see a good side of the supernatural, huh?"
He nodded avidly before stopping short.
"Wait. Do you kill them, too?"
I glared at him.
"Of course not! We're not cold blooded killers, you know? We only kill what kills human."
I don't think I'd ever be able to kill a fairy; they were so pure and innocent!
"You kill killers?"
"Yeah."
"What does that make you, then?"
I thought about it.
"Killers. But without us, a whole lot of people would be dead by now. You would've died ages ago, Dakota."
He seemed to think that over.
"But still. Who are you to dictate what can and can't live? Even if they are all evil and killers?"
"We don't dictate who can and can't live. We just follow orders and try to protect the ones we love."
"Take orders? From who?"
I looked around before replying.
"The Hunters' Conclave,"
"Conclave, huh? Sounds very official,"
I giggled at that.
"Yeah, they usually send us cases from other states when they need help and we go and take care of it. That's why Danny and Dylan are gone so often. They're the best Hunters there are. I'm gonna be like them someday." I told him.
"If I get back in time for my exam, that is," I added as an afterthought.
"You had an exam today?"
"Yeah. To become a Freshman Hunter. I'm an Apprentice right now."
"Oh, like The Sorcerer's Apprentice? They're your teachers?"
I nodded and handed him another piece of gum when I heard him stomach growl.
"We need to find water," I said, distracted.
He snorted.
"We already passed some water!"
I rolled me eyes at that.
"There were kelpies there, moron."
"Huh? What the heck is a kelpie?"
"It's something that will drown you the first chance it gets. They live in swamps or rivers. They drown you and eat you." I told him in a serious tone.
He cringed.
"For reals?" he asked me in disbelief.
"Uh huh. And , yes, we usually do kill those."
"So... you said that you don't kill all supernaturals. So the ones that you don't kill... do you like keep tabs on them or what?"
"Not all of them, just the ones that we think might try something as soon as we turn our backs on them. But others are just... left alone. Like my cousin, Caleb. Remember him? You met him like two years ago. Anyways, he's a werewolf. The Hunter's Conclave knows all about him and his pack, but they're harmless. They even help us out sometimes, when we need them to. They live up in Montana, and they give us any info that might help catch other supernaturals that might present a threat to humans."
"Caleb's a werewolf?!" he exclaimed.
I chuckled, nodding.
"Woah! I never saw that one coming."
"Yeah. We work with him and his pack a lot,"
It was his turn to nod.
"And Hailey? Deaton? Yeah, she's a witch. She's one of the good guys, though. She helps us Apprentices a lot, actually."
That floored him.
"Hailey? Wow, who would've thought..."
"I know..."
He seemed to think about something before he spoke again.
"Danny and Dylan are both... Hunters..."
"Your dad was too." I told him with a soft voice.
That seemed to catch him off guard.
His dad had passed away almost four years ago, during a Hunt gone wrong. Daniel had been 17, so the Conclave pulled a few string and managed to give Danny custody of his brothers, since their mum had also passed away, almost ten years before.
Up until then, Dakota had thought that his dad had been a salesman and that he had died in a car accident.
