I walked all morning to try to forget you
But I found myself going round in circles
I stopped at a cafe to meet a friend
But when she got there I began to despair
I sat in the park watching the workmen
As they strained to dig up the road
I picked up a newspaper and put it down again
Can’t find what I want written there in print
You were there then you were gone
It was over before it’d begun
So much that was left to say
To my paperman who blew away
I wander round these city streets all day
Looking for a bargain in the sales
I see a man I knew but I’m too scared to say
Anything to him at all wonder if you will call
You were there then you were gone
It was over before it’d begun
So much that was left to say
To my paperman who blew away
I sit in this restaurant by myself
As the maitre d’ lists the choices
Looking at the menu I scream for help
I choose alone no one else is on their own
I cut out little bits of paper
In the hope I’m making a paper chain
Full of paper men in miniature
Who won’t walk out and I won’t shout
You were there then you were gone
It was over before it’d begun
So much that was left to say
To my paperman who blew away
