Chapter 40

6 Months later

(Wolfe's POV)

"Morning, Aimee." I greet as our new pack doctor walks in. After coming back to Sacramento, Aimee had decided to join our pack and work as Crystal's (our current pack doctor) apprentice.

"Morning, Alpha." Her voice matches mine in the lack of enthusiasm as she walks in and takes a seat in front of my desk. We both knew what this was about and neither of us liked it.

"Well as you know, I've come to give you the daily report you requested-" she starts before I stop her.

"Just tell me. There's no change in her condition?"

"No, Alpha. I'm sorry." She looks up from her clipboard, her eyes full of tears. It was like this every morning.

Sighing I lean back in my chair, my heart heavy.

"Is there any hope?" I ask quietly. I hadn't given up hope so far but maybe it was time I did.

"There's always hope, Wolfe." she whispers, reverting back to using my name.

"It's been so long AImee...that....-"

"Give it time. I refuse to believe that this is the end. Gabrielle is strong, you know this."

I nod my head in agreement, but deep inside my heart was breaking.

"Where is she now?" I ask, standing up. I hadn't seen her since last night, she rarely slept in our bedroom now. Sometimes she would wind up in Jerry's room. (Jerry had taken up a room at the pack house now that he was part of the pack as well)

And sometimes she would leave and end up back at her parents house.

"I just checked on her, she's with Jerry out back." AImee stands as well, following me out of my small offiice.

"I'll meet you guys for lunch, Crystal wants me to go over for a few hours." She calls out as she walks away.

I don't bother responding, knowing she would be back in time to check on Gabrielle anyway.

As I pass the rec room I hear a few voices coming from inside and stop to check out who it was.

"Nothing man, not a trace. It's like he fucking disspeared into thin air." Danny tells Marcus. He was standing with his team of 12. They, along with 16 other teams around the states, were in charge of finding Frederick and bringing him in. Dead or Alive.

"That's impossible. He must be using another name. We have to find him-" Marcus stops when he hears me come in.

"Alpha." Danny greets me as I walk in. His team stands up right and they all look down to the floor, showing their respect.

"Danny. What do you have to report?"

"Nothing, Wolfe. I'm sorry. The son of a bitch has left no trail."

"We'll find him,Wolfe. " Marcus says, convincingly.

"Word has spread of his betrayal to every pack in the united states. There's a price on his head now, it's now a matter of time before we find him." He adds.

"Alright, keep me updated." And with that I walk out to the back of the house in search of my mate.

As I walk outside of the house I feel my chest constrict painfully just like everytime I looked at Gabrielle. She was beautiful.

Even in her wolf form there was no mistaking her breath-taking beauty. She was so fluid and graceful as she jumped around Jerry, playfully trying to nip at his hands. I stand there for a few moments not wanting to interrupt this small happy time she was clearly having. Her head turns suddenly and her eyes lock with mine.

With one last nip at Jerry, she turns and runs my way visibly happy to see me.

"Hey baby." I call out to her as my hands sink into her soft fur. I sit on the grass and bring her onto my lap as she turns to lick my face in greeting.

"Where were you last night? I missed you." I tell her quietly, trying to keep the reprimand from my voice. She hated it when I asked her where she slept.

She lays on the grass next to me and covers her eyes with her both paws. I shake my head and smile down at her.

She whines but keeps covering her face.

"She wasn't with me last night." Jerry says as he comes over to sit near us.

At that, Gabrielle uncovers her eyes and if possible glares at Jerry.

"What?" He shrugs at her.

"Just be careful, Gabrielle." I say as I continue to stroke her head and back. She yawns laying down her head on the cool grass as she closes her eyes. In a few hours it would be too hot to be outside so I refrained from bringing her inside, letting her bask in the sun for a while.

I look at Jerry questioningly but he just shakes his head no.
